Baltimore County (Where I live) Just announced that they will be doing Online Distance Learning for the first half of the upcoming school year. That is through January 29th, 2021. ...All other counties in Maryland who have announced their official plans have done the same thing. I am pretty sure the entire state will decide to do online distance learning. The city announced their plans yesterday. One County so far (Montgomery County) announced a phased in plan of getting students back into the school buildings. They will start with the lower grades Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd in elementary schools first sometime in the first 2 months of the school year, then 3rd through 8th grades around month 3, and high school around month 4. They will plan to start out with just a few days a week, then once the Pandemic is supressed to very low numbers, open schools up entirely.

I suspect every other Maryland county to follow a similar path to either Baltimore, or Montgomery County.

No sports or after school activities to occur during this time.

I suspect the economy will be stuck in this partially open suppressed state until April or May of next year because of all of this. Should make for a pretty dismal rest of 2020, and 1st quater of 2021.

What is your local area/state doing for the upcoming school year?

Our schools usually have a Homecoming Dance .. I don't recall seeing anything pertaining to dances yet. They need to open the schools first ..

I don't think I've done a school dance since my son was in Middle school. That's gotta be like 10 years ago. It's not that I wouldn't or couldn't do one - they simply don't exist in any worthwhile form anymore. There's proms - but, that's like watching cat-fight between sweet-16 DJs. They can have at it.

Schools used to be a great source of recurring business but a lack of student interest, safety and discipline, and a sea of teen-age wannabees clam-digging in the receding tide makes them unprofitable. I'm sure there are still rural places where homecoming reigns supreme - but, in the cities of the seacoasts, not so much.

Good luck with that. I am certain that any democratic leaning states politically will be keeping their school systems closed at least in September/October. The teachers unions are pretty much forcing online distance learning to occur for a while. Their reasoning is to protect everyone including teachers and staff because they are more susceptible to the Virus putting them in the hospital or potentially death. ...They also say to keep the students safety as well, but the fact is that it is very Rare for kids to have a serious infection from Covid 19. For 98%+ of children age 5 to 17 it is no symptoms or basically a mild Cold. It appears that the Seasonal FLU is actually a deadlier threat to school age children than COVID19 is. We have never closed schools due to the seasonal FLU going around.

The FLU has killed 144 kids this past season, while CoronaVirus killed about 25 or so I believe? How come we never bothered closing schools down in previous years due to FLU Season?

I am surprised! ...Is that the entire state, or just your local county?

If there are any counties who go back in September to school here in Maryland, I think it would be the far western counties Garret and Allegheny. They have smaller school populations, and are very republican counties. However, I heard Frostburg University is doing online learning out that way starting out, so the public schools may follow suit.

Whole state .. they are working on the issues as we speak (funding of PPE, what if a teacher has health issues, etc.).

For those people that missed the bus. Covid it’s not like the flu. The flu has never inundated the hospitals with so many people and so many deaths in a manner in months. That comes from medical Doctors including doctors I speak with directly each week. Although kids maybe less likely to get it they can be asymptomatic and carry it home to their family and also the staff/teacher. If you ever spoke to a teacher you’d know kids are walking germ machines. Over the past few years there’s already been issues of stuff spreading throughout schools sending kids home & getting teachers/staff sick. How do I know? By talking directly to people in education who work in the schools. Actually with things surging in certain areas, 150K dead and counting, the US restricted from travel to many countries. Opening schools isn’t the biggest issue now. Those that were planning on opening are already reconsidering that decision. Colleges which are my market are doing the same thing.

Well as of now the reports are that school here is scheduled to start August 13.

I doubt we will see any dances this fall.

I not sure I would even want any school events with all the uncertainty. ( the price would have to be right )

So far in my county only 1 school had made a decisoin - school board voted 8-1 to do virtual to start. I suspect to hear more next week from others.

Also, currently, as its always changing... no indoor gatherings of more than 25 people.

bars are at 25% capacity, MUST buy food to get alcohol and when you're done with your meal no more alcohol allowed. Snacks are NOT food..must be a meal. And no sitting at the bar, no games, no juke boxes. Pretty dismal.

So far my fall weddings are all still on...have to double check with 8/15 as they are in a hotel...25% would be fine, not a big wedding and it's in the big ballroom...but 25 TOTAL people (which they say includes staff too!) well, that's not gonna work.

8/1 is a barn venue, outside tent attached..so limit is 250 and should be fine. It's a reschedule from 6/6 and brides says "it's just a party" - announce them in, toasts, first dance, that's it. They got married 6/6 as planned, just no party then.

I doubt schools will stay open IF they open at all. All it's gonna take is a few positive/sick kids and wham, it will all be closed. Parents in my district want the schools open "we need to work so someone had to care for our kids" - lots of debate on FB about 'responsibility' for raising your own kids, it's not the gov'ts responsibility, etc.
