I had a woman ask if I have any "salsa" the other night. I don't that I know of, other than stuff that might happen to possibly be salsa by Gloria Estefan or Elvis Crespo...

I looked at some compilation CD's on Amazon but it makes my head spin.

Can anyone recommend a good Salsa compilation CD that I could pull a few songs from if I get any "spicy" requests in the future?

I had a Halloween party that they wanted some latin music for Salsa. Ed recommended to me Elvis Crespo from there I found Suavemente which they loved to Salsa to. Hope it helps.

Salsa en la Calle 2006

Also the "Now That's Music" series has Latin music and I believe they just released the second in the series.

Hope it helps ya!

DJ Gray probably has a great list for this as he posted several great dance lists on another site if we are nice perhaps he will share them here. I was in process of stickying posts with Salsa in mind as well as merengue, Cha Cha and Cumbia and other various Latin styles. Hopefully some of our very own Latin members could assist us with the various lists.Rig,Jayvilla, and a few other members might be so kind to donate the various styles for the masses here.

Salsa music has cowbell.

Literally. lol

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Suavamente a Merengue?

Gilberto Santa Rosa IS Salsa.

I have no freakin clue. The party that I did specifically asked for Suavemente for Salsa, so I just assumed that there were different songs that you could Salsa to.

Hey Carolyn, how's everything since the CPS Summit?

Suavemente is a merengue. yourBasic hit the nail right on the head, Salsa has a cowbell... after a while that bell becomes LOUD and annoying. lol

Salsa vs Merengue

Generally speaking,

When you listen to Salsa music you will usually hear a dominant 4/4 beat that is syncoated like this:
1, 2, 3, &4, 5, 6, 7, &8
or
Boom, Boom, Boom, Boomboom, Boom, Boom, Boom, Boomboom

When you listen to Merengue music you will usually hear a straight (unsyncopated) dominant 4/4 beat like this:
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8
or
Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom

There will be variations of course. That's why I put in the word usually. This is just a "rule of thumb" kind of thing to help you differentiate between the two forms.

All that said, in my experience, unless you are playing for a Salsa Competition event, if you accidently play some Merengue music selections in with your Salsa music selections the Salsa dance crowd will fine with it.

Great posts, I am still learning Latin music have not had much of an occasion to use it. In the past year or so our area has just had a major influx of Spanish people so I am sure that I will be learning.

Hey Arnoldo great to see you again!

hey Crazi tell me about it and I even spent many yrs in SOCAlifornia. Wow this is what this site is all about . Other places folks either ignore or bash the lack of knowledge. Almost like pulling teeth to get this kind of sharing. Way to go Bill and everyone else.
Even Basic and his cowbell.

Salsa vs. Merengue

The easiest way to differentiate these is by BPM. Salsa's are typically in the 100 to 110 range. Merengues are typically in the 120 to 130 range.

I can help you anyway I can, call me or email me or post how may I help you. You can visit my site for all the Salsa you need but it might not help you since you will only see name of songs and artists. I will help you to select the most popular Salsa that you must have for an event. PM, email, or call if you like.
Hope this helps.
Freddy.

you are right, that's a great collection, i get them whenever i get a chance, the only problem i find (even myself ) is that is geared towards a more dedicated market, and not towards the 'one hit wonders' requests at company parties and the such. other than that i think they are great, excellent point.:sqcool:

suavemente is possibly the most well known contemporary song these days..

great reading ya'll

LOL - This midwestern boy is trying to learn about Latin music, but it's really confusing with all the different "regional" preferences. Maybe, I'll understand it all someday..... :D

On another train of thought: :sqerr:

I bought a CD this summer, (it's not Salsa) by Olga Tanon "100% Merengue" and I really like it a lot!

My dear fellow american dj... That's why I'm here for, any day just shoot me an instant or contact me, and I will be glad to share with you anything I know.

Just remember this:

Mexico <---- Mostly, 50% banda music, then 10% each to: Spanish pop, Spanish rock (rock en espanol), ranchera, sonidera, world music

Puerto Rico: 80% salsa, 15% reggaeton, 5% world

Republica Dominicana: Merengue

Colombia & Venezuela (South America) Salsa, cumbia, rock, pop, and their own form of merengue

Brazil: Rumba, Soca, World

Central America: (as in guatemala, nicaragua, panama...) Cumbia, salsa & Merengue...

This of course can be highly debated but according to stats. by people like Sony, Emi, Billboard, Unvision... etc, that's how they break it.

Any thing I can help let me know...

DeeJRig,

Thank you thank you!! There aren't any DJ's in my area that specialize in Latin music. Orlando yes, here no, I have had a few clients now requesting that I have Latin music at their parties and had no clue where to start a collection at. Thanks to you now I do, much appreciated.
