I'm looking into SoundSwitch as a backup alternative to Mydmxgo. It seems that it syncs with dj software but does this mean you still have to program each and every song? I'm trying to understand how it syncs to the music etc. It seems like the advantage of Mydmxgo (if it works the way it should) is the ability to do effects on the fly. Didn't know if you can do this with Sound Switch. I know Taso uses SoundSwitch. Anyone else? Insight on advantages and disadvantages?

I use it, I don't think Taso does.

I'm happy to talk through how I use it, and I was thinking about putting together a video on this subject because there seems to be a lot of confusion around how it works.

Basically there are three modes:

1) Autoloops

2) Scripted Tracks

3) Static Scenes

Autoloops play whenever there is music on, but no scripted track. Think of them like an automatic mode, but they will still match your beat grid. So it's like a more advanced version of a sound activated system. - Autoloops are the first thing you should spend time editing, because they will be on 99% of the time when you start using SoundSwitch.

Scripted Tracks allow you to program a show to the track itself. So if you want your lights to do the same thing every time you play a specific song - this is what you do. It will remember movement and color cues, and bring them back at the same spot every time you're playing this song. Scripted tracks will override the Autoloops.

Static Scenes are any static look that you want temporarily, or for a while. So for example.. cake cutting. If you want your movers to spotlight the cake, you can hit a button and send them into your cake scene. You tap the button again, it goes back to what they were doing.

I also use them for slow dances in general. I don't want nearly as much movement during slow dances, so I will have a static scene that is much more calm so that I don't ruin the mood.

I hope that helps, but I'm happy to walk you through more of it if there are additional questions.

Thanks Ross! I may take you up on that. Did you find it to be a large learning curve? Also, correct me if I'm wrong but my understanding is that this is not a sound activated system because it's reading the bpm in the dj software and therefore doesn't need to rely on a sound activation.

I think the basics of the software are pretty easy to grasp quickly. As you get deeper into it... there is a lot it can do. But you can be functional quickly.

It is not sound activated, you're right. It's reading the beat grid on your song files. I just mean it sort of acts like a more advanced sound active feature since it will keep everything nicely in time.

might be nice to script out certain key songs like ...say... uptown funk....shout....line dances....stuff u know you might play a lot...or that have special parts....like say... "turn down for what" or other edm style songs with drops and breaks...

from what ive seen the auto loops work just fine as well...

okay, so another sound switch question. Are you using a Donner Dongle or equivalent (or can you) to go wireless to your fixtures?

All of my uplights are Chauvet Freedom pars, so I use their FlareCon system which sends wireless DMX to them. On the movers, I have those hard wired together with DMX cable.

I have the FlareCon and Freedom Pars as well. Are you saying that you wire the SoundSwitch to a splitter and then one dmx cable goes from the splitter to the dmx-in of the flare con (to control your Freedom Pars) and another dmx cable to your movers? And if so, I'm assuming you're just not using the Flarecon app to control anything. The SoundSwitch takes the place of that.

Or you go wired to the movers and attach the Flarecon to the last mover DMX out.

The FlareCon has an DMX In, and a DMX Out. My wiring looks like this:

Laptop -> SoundSwitch Box -> FlareCon -> Movers

The FlareCon can be switched between Wifi Input, or DMX input. But the DMX Through still works even if you aren't sending DMX to the wireless fixtures. I will often use the FlareCon app early in the night to set a static color for dinner. When it's time to dance and I want SoundSwitch to take over, I switch the FlareCon input to DMX.

oh yeah. Forgot about the dmx-out on it. I've just always used the app and the wifi input to control the lights. I wish they would do a significant update to the app so it could do more. I like your set up and idea though with static during dinner etc using the app and then using the Soundswitch for the dancing segment

BTW, if anyone needs a spare, I have a Flarecon Air that I don't use since going to myDMX Go. I'll hold on to a D-Fi transmitter should I need to control my lone Freedom Par.
