QSC vs Crown vs Crest Audio amp. Which would you choose and why?

My whole system is still passive, and probably will remain that way until there is a good sounding, reliable, 20 Pound, 12" active top, and some
good sounding, reliable, 40 Pound, 15" active subs. The Behringer NU3000 weighs 7 pounds.

At my age, it's all about the weight, plus I got a C+ on the test!

You just need to downsize a bit. An 8" EV ZXA1-90 is just 19 lbs, or if you prefer RCF, an ART-708A at 22 lbs. Both can put out 127 db SPL. Likewise, a 12" RCF SUB 702-AS II weighs only 39 lbs, and the EV ELX200-12SP sub is 43 lbs, both with 129 db SPL. If I need to move more air than that, I can easily double them up. The ZXA1's also pair up well with JBL EON 610's, which are only 26 lbs (switch the EV's high-pass filter ON). I like the 610's broad coverage angle combined with the EV's bright highs.

Downsize? This is America!

Truth be told, I could have made my DIY 15" Neo magnet subs even lighter than 40 pounds, but I run tops over subs, there is a stability issue if the subs are too light, and I can deal with 40 pounds on the floor. Plus, they sound dam good! This little stinker sits between my electronic 100 hz crossover and the subwoofer amp -

It, like a lot of my equipment, has been modified. Specifically, the "subsonic filter" part was removed since the crossover already has a 24db/octave High Pass filter. At low to medium levels, I run 6db boost at 40 hz, then switch it off (which is a true bypass) when things get loud. DO NOT DO THIS unless you know what you are doing or you hate your subs!!!

Here's the vintage prosumer version of that Radio Shack special: a dbx 1BX Dynamic Range Expander (actually a rack-mountable compander, but nvm). I use this to make Blu-ray surround sound channels pop (they're typically compressed for home theater playback). Dbx also made multi-band versions of this outboard unit, but for live sound I stick with full-range dynamic processors.

I had one of the 224 units as well as one of these ...

Ha! I laugh at your silly little boxes!! THIS is a real speaker destroyer -

The "Allison Electronic Subwoofer", which could apply some ridiculous boost at a just as ridiculous low frequency. I have one of these as well, but I'm too chicken to use it!

My current booster ... and it does an amazing job ..

I am still all passive for everything I own 2 powered speakers and I gave one to my dad lol. If I were buying an amp I would go with Crest Pro Lite units. I own 3 of them 3k, 5k, and 7.5k all have been great performers over the years. I don't care for the crown XTI series to me, If I went QSC I would want to go PL or PLD series and they would be much more expensive though. Lightweight is pretty important to me for small amp racks. for my bigger rigs I don't mind the weight because I never pick them up. Open ramp door roll them right into venue.

I'd choose whichever one the rental house is offering to me. If an event requires more gear than what I already own, I'm renting or borrowing it, not buying it.

Hey Steve how do you use this unit?

Is it for active or passive?
It's in line between the mixer output and the amps (so works with both) .. either directly from the mixer or via an insert (depending on which mixer). I don't bring it as much as I did as it's in my large case, so it goes only to larger events. If you're familiar with the BBE units, it's used the same way, but the effects aren't as crude. They don't make this unit any more .. the current version has a "tube" inline and they have a software only plug-in for DAWs.
