Purchased My First Pickup Truck EVAH! Will I Listen To More Country Music Now?

Just make sure you get a VERY secure truck cap, Cap.

Caps are only as secure as the chainsaw the thief is using to open them ;)

As I've never owned one before, what's considered "secure" other than lockable twist knobs?

What Tunes said ^

But they do make cheaper versions.
Ones that have better doors, and locks that are more secure than the twist kind.

Safety Note: Be extra careful if / when there is alot of weight on that slide and pay attention to load limits on the slide and for the truck. It appears the slide is rated for 1500 lbs (evenly distributed). It may or may not hold that all of that weight well if it's cantilevered off the back of the truck.

I find the half ton is just too tall to climb in and out of the bed that often and currently, a bed slide just won't work for me - hence the trailer (plus I got too much crap - it won't all fit in the truck). When I need to, I'll still use the bed but everything must then fit in the cab and bed - and in the bed, it must fit under a lockable hard lid / tonneau cover (which I can do without subs).

An additional benefit of the trailer for most people is that there's rarely any loading and unloading at the point of origin.

I typically house 2x4's in the bed (you can use them as cross braces) - I use them kind of like an organizer / storage net - keeps things closer to the tailgate / from getting all around the bed.

I like the idea of the bed slide, so I may look into it more down the road. Not sure if I like being limited to the width between the wheel arches - and you lose some height (for the slide and the slide rails).

Additionally, my visual preference for caps is a cab high model. The downside of this is that it decreases the distance / things you can see in your rear view mirror. This is why there are caps that are higher near the tailgate, so that the view is not obstructed - these higher caps may also have issues fitting into garages.

This is not gospel - these are my opinions as a fellow half ton'r.

If you go with a steel top, please also take into consideration the weight of one - you may need to beef up the rear end of the truck (to prevent sagging). This may change how the vehicle rides and feels. Also keep in mind that any cap / lid / slide / etc takes away from your overall payload - and beefing up the rear end does not give you additional payload.

Got it. Thanks again for all the intel.

The current cap is even/level with the truck cab height, made of fiberglass, but not lockable. I'll be changing out those handles for something more secure, or, add a latching system of some sort. Unless more height was needed, there's no immediate need to change out the current cap.

I just figured a city boy like Cap might need some larnin..................
Well, a pickup with a Cap (pun intended) is more like New Country/Pop anyway ..

You can pick up handles for about $20 a piece. if you look hard maybe even less. Depending on the cap there's also latch downs that are on the inside

So it's been over 3 years how did it work out for you @Cap Capello?

I traded my Sierra and got a '16 F150 a couple of years ago. The only thing other than maintenance I did was a water pump but I think the Throttle Body is starting to act up other than that I love the truck

Just when I thought one of my worst decisions ever was behind me, someone digs up the dirt again.

I HATED that truck for many reasons, most due to the lack of many creature comforts but mostly due the lack of multiple access doors to get to various pieces of equipment. I traded it in within a couple of months and bought a new Ford Transit Connect XLT - LWB which is much more conducive to my mobile DJ needs.

I was listening to more CW radio and I've observed that music style quickly devolve into a main mainstream hip hop snap crackle pop rap trash.

I agree the F150 isn't the best choice for what we do but I got to ask what features was it missing?
