PrimeCuts Closing Permanently December 31st

I think the rapid expansion of streaming services is why you're going to see an eventual end to music pools.
It is not necessary to a DJs craft to own the music - they simply need to be able to play it.
As a DJ all I really require of the music is access rights - not property rights.

I agree, in theory. However, Wi-Fi (and even cellular coverage) is not ubiquitous, so the ability to download (i.e. Spotify premium) is still mimimum functionality. A few other thoughts:

- Time spent building library and playlists. Transitioning to streaming from a big 'ol MP3 hard drive will be painful, if/when we as an industry are forced to do so.

- Current library of owned files does not depend on a comapny existing. PrimeCuts going away? Files are still mine. Spotify goes under someday and I've re-built my library within that ecosystem? Uh oh...

- "Curated" downloads. While there is certainly plenty of fluff, and some day I may have a reckoning with hard drive space someday, the drag-drop-forget weekly/monthly downloads and decent confidence that I'll have 95% of requests is nice.

It will be interesting to see where we are in 5-10 years.

None of these things are a problem, really.
A license and local cache solves the WiFi issue. A playlist is really just a text file so it has a certain amount of portability by conversion.
The company can be irrelevant because they would merely be a broker of the music license. If the service provider closes shop you move your license to another broker.

Local cache does not solve any issues - unless you cache the entire library, which if you're going to cache it, you might as well download it.

Company being irrelevant only applies if all of these providers use the same standard, recognize external licenses and supply the same materials. If Promo Only closes shop tomorrow, I highly doubt any other provider will just let you in the pool just because they closed up. Additionally, if all of these organizations are in the same licensing scheme, if one of them closes shop, I'm willing to bet the others are not far behind.

These are the 2 reasons why I have not yet gone to Spotify.

I have 23,000 tracks in MY library and whatever tracks I "get" from Spotify can't be blended together with mine. Plus I can't edit Spotify tracks to match my slightly OCD tag specifics.

And yes, if Spotify goes away, what then?

Forced to do so? Oh man, I hope not!

Just consider Spotify "another" music source .. like your current MP3s, CDs, or a plugged in phone. There are apps that will blend your library and Spotify together seamlessly ... here's one: Professional DJ App for Windows - djay Pro by Algoriddim - (https://www.algoriddim.com/djay-pro-windows)

Steve, I retired from the DJ biz back at the end of 2013, so a DJ app is no help, but thanks.

I use Google play for all my music as I can play tracks at home through my Google Home units and in my car on my phone.

I sort of get your "another source" suggestion, but I can't wrap my head around separate sources. And that's my fault/issue/problem due to my slightly OCD mindset.

Maybe I'll give Spotify a try again....

Do you have an iPad or iPhone? DJay Pro apps on those do the same thing.

Welp, I'm going to keep downloading MP3s to a hard drive like it's 2001 until I can't anymore.

Back on the original topic, looks like Jim has updated the placeholder website with a slightly pixelated logo... ;)

About Promo Only
Headquartered in Orlando FL, Promo Only’s pioneering passion for promotion has earned it the distinction of having been voted IDMA Best Promo Subscription Service/Music Pool 2006 to current. Delivering content via CD, DVD and direct digital download, Promo Only offers the widest selection of Clean Edits, Intro Edits, limited-release dance mixes, HD Video, and HD Video Classics in the industry at prices that have remained unchanged throughout its 26-year history.

Well shucks. I hate the POOL interface/software. But Promo Only is definitely better than ERG and RPM/Top Hits USA.

I am a fan of idjpool.com if you need to change anyway ...

I think I tried them at one point a while ago. Do they have the weekly download folder based on the Billboard hot 100? That was a handy feature.

No .. they stopped that a few years ago .. and yes it was convenient. On the plus side, I was on the basic Hot 100/AT Top 40 plan, and when they dropped it, they gave me the full plan at no change in price (and have kept me on a reduced rate since) .. I consider that top shelf service.

I've had RPM, Promo Only and idjpool. Promo Only sent explicit material marked as clean on more than one occasion (and no response when it was pointed out) so they were kicked off the island. idjpool has more than plenty of versions of current stuff. RPM has given me everything I need (and more) without overdoing it.
