Power amps

My only question, what kind of gig(s) are you using these for?
Either retirement home socials or hospital intensive care unit parties!

OTST, I recall reading about a service that provided HUGE bass for schools with deaf & hearing impaired students...anyone else recall that thread?

I really was not planning on doing school dances but, the DJ that has done most of the larger schools here, packed up and moved to Florida.

So about 15 to 20 dances a year just fell into my lap.

Congratulations on picking up the additional events. That's a great addition to your year.

My only comment and food for thought would be. Do you really need 8-18" subs for these school dances? Maybe you do, but a good friend/dj
who markets to Proms with pretty large setups uses no more than 4 active subs, but typically 2 to 3 and adequately covers
his events.

What Steve and Sawdust have recommended sounds like sound advice to me. Having multiples, redundancy and scalability are things that I would highly look into....oh and some strong backs :)

Peavey had just come out with the first series of IPR amps, when I heard the Jagermeister Mobile Stage for the first time. 8 double 18" cabinets, powered by (if I remember correctly) four IPR 6000's, so it was actually 16 woofer drivers in total. The setup was outside at Daytona Beach, and it was absolutely stunning for a "portable" rig - the kind of thing people with pacemakers should stay away from - loud and very low.

As in drag racing, there is absolutely no substitute for cubic inches!

Around here about the most they are will to pay is $800 to 900.

That just floors me. In my area, it's usually smaller schools, maybe 150-200 kids and the price runs $500-$750. Not to mention, the schools are so fickle and over-controlling. I don't see how you guys make anything off schools. They're just not worth my time.

That is a large problem around here as the schools only look at price and don't care about the increase in equipment that it takes to do these larger shows.

I just glad that I already had most of the equipment just sitting around. I will see how this all plays out, if they are not wiling to pay a little more I will just put everything back into storage.

There are some tactics to overcome price 1000 kids $10 a tickets, hmmm that’s $10,000.00 where’s all that money go??? Hopefully some of it goes in your pocket

Yes, these schools are used to having large sound systems for their events, and about 1/2 of these events will have between 800 to 1200 kids attend.

Big system requirements require big paychecks and it sounds like this is a lose-lose situation. You're telling us that schools don't wanna' pay but 'they think'
that they have to have this HUGE sound system. My opinion is that you could use 4-subs and still be fine. I know plenty of DJs who use 4 - qsc kw181 for dances of 900-1100 and even a pair of 18's for up to 500. I'm fully on board with the facts of what it takes to move air, but just do not believe that you need to crush the guests with bass. JMHO. If you're still insistent that you need 8-subs at all of these dances, I'd say a minimum of 4 amps to do it properly.

nothing wrong with running 8 18"s you have more flexibility to scale as needed. I own 10 dual 18s for that reason. Kids do love bass also opens up opportunities for running Live Sound for bands if needed and doing small concerts. That's what I do.
