Here is one from yesterday, I always ask to describe their perfect wedding, gives me a good idea what to offer:

Our perfect wedding in terms of entertainment would include a DJ who is able to keep the crowd entertained from beginning to end. We want everyone on the dance floor, dancing and having a good time. We want to listen and dance to music that all generations can enjoy. We want to have a good balance between ethnic music (old and new), as well as some top 40 hits, some hip hop and maybe even reggae, and the wedding classics (YMCA, Shout etc). Also, a DJ who takes requests from guests. We are looking for a DJ who will also act as an MC, speaking fluent my ethnic language and English, and organizing the bouquet toss and other games and activities throughout the night. Special effects such as lighting is important to create the right party atmosphere. Overall, we are looking to throw a great party, in which everyone has an awesome time and dances from beginning to end. A packed dance floor is the ideal situation.

That line in red will be a huge upsell ...
As far as great party, I will take them to the place they never been before :sqwink:

I can't remember the last time (if at all?) anyone asked me about my lights or effects.
Must be a regional thing?

Must be, last 3-4 years only one wedding with no lights.

My "typical" wedding email:

Hello,

Are you available on "x" date? How much do you charge? Please send me an email. I prefer not to talk on the phone yet.

Signed;

X

Yep, that is about how 75% of mine are.

Ditto and an age thing.

"My brother recently got married and you provided the DJ services. I enjoyed your manner and non intrusive way in which you worked. I also know that my brother and sister in law were happy with your work. "

"Found you on the web and liked your FAQ section. We are looking for a DJ that is low key and that will keep our event running smoothly."

Same here... THEY never ask about lights, but I always do in hopes of upselling them... which still, doesn't happen all that often.

Papa Deuce, it's surprising the number of people who contact us by email requesting no phone calls, but just a quote by email.

Hard to do business that way, IMO... so I will only go so far with that before giving up.

Using the contact form thru my website, I get all the info that I need to begin the process. Since utilizing the contact form, I haven't recieved any dumb emails like those above. :sqwink:

I am getting married on 10/18/2009 how much for 4 hours and how much do you charge for overtime in case we need an extra hour my family really likes to party.

80% of all emails are 2 lines sentences. 99.9% of those emails do not include the location of the event.

Like Randy, I use a form on my site. It gathers what I need to contact them, fill out paperwork, and give them a quote.

I can't really relate to the thing where an initial email tells me what to "offer" because my process - ie "what I offer" is the same for everyone. The end results are tailored for each couple, but how we get there is the same for all - and thats what Im selling them on is the process that shows them ahead of time how we will get there and where we will be when we're done (ie where they WANT to BE... and therein lies the beauty and the SALE!)

Doesn't matter the vibe they want, upbeat, low-key, high-key, formal, semi-formal, tosses, no tosses, whatever - the price for the process to get there is the same for all, and the performance just is what it is (ie what they want).

My "pitch" stays the same regardless of what they are looking for - I guess I'm the only one? :sqlaugh:

How many book after asking for a price by email?

My price and how to calculate additions is on the website.

As to my typical inquiry, for those that don't know how to click on the Check Availability link,

Hi,

My wedding is on xx/xx/xxxx. Are you available and how much?

To which I reply:

Hello and congratulations on your engagement and upcoming special day.

[If available]

Yes, I am available for your special day; however, I need some additional information before I can give you a price quote. Please answer the following questions.

1. What is the start and send time of your reception?
2. Do you want us to perform your ceremony as well? Will it be in the same venue and same room in that venue?
3. At what venue will your reception be held?

[If not available.]

I am sorry but I am not available for your special day; however, here is contact information for other great DJs in your area.

I'm right on the border of NY and NJ. I primarily work north & central New Jersey and the New York Hudson Valley. Nearly all my Jersey weddings are using uplighting and/or monogram lighting. Nearly all of my NY weddings have no add-ons.

It's not pretty, but it gives us the basic contact info and we go from there.

my inquires vary, depending on how they got my name.
if they found me on a wedding website, it's usually just "are you available" and "how much"
if the referral came from a more personal source, there is usually a bit more conversation involved in the email
(followed by "are you available" and "how much")

can't say I blame them
why go thru all the details if I am NOT available or they don't like the price!
once they are interested, then I get into the details.

as for the lighting issue, some brides make a point about having them...
others could care less and don't even ask.

(this is from Eastern PA)

Just a personal note, but you should always upsell lights like Papa is. This is one of the first things I tell new DJ when I am educating them. I had a grandpa last saturday night tell me that while he didn't enjoy the music all that much the lighting was very entertaining.
