THe massive complete shut downs are really ramping up now. I expect Maryland's Governor to make an announcement for Maryland tomorrow or Saturday.

I believe San Francisco is on lock down, and New York City is about to make the call last time I heard their Mayor speak.

No, it’s a conspiracy, hoax, just like the flu. Nothing to worry about.
My wife & daughter who work in NYC have been working from home for a week now. The crack down will get worse as numbers go up, which they will because only a few have been tested. NYC is going to be tricky as most don’t keep more than a couple of days of food at a time. My godmother lives right near Central Park West has a tiny frig & tiny co-op. very typical for the area. Hospitals are gearing up for the rush of people. Luckly I am on the Island but those in the medical field here are preparing too. My sister who’s a nurse and the doctors at the medical school where I proctor are hoping we won’t get hit as hard as NYC.

I think Newsom issued the order to keep CA tax payers in the state. He is otherwise doing everything to drive residents away. I will say that this virus has made the AB-5 gig law mostly irrelevant for the music industry. The bars and venues are closed. Mastering engineers, who tend to work solo, may still be busy but only if they don't work on vinyl (lacquers are no longer available due to a fire).

It will be interesting to see how my employer acts tomorrow. It isn't very clear which jobs are essential. My company is closely related to the information technology sector so perhaps we can operate but when I dig into the gov documentation, it seems that hardware manufacturers are not exempted. I've been working from home because I can. However, I was supposed to drop of some equipment at the office tomorrow for others to use. It is not clear those others will be able to show up.

Working in radio, were are...and will be...working through all of this.
I was given two special passes, issued by the Pennsylvania Association of Broadcasters.
One allows me to buy gas, in case they are rationing it...
the other allows me to drive where I need to drive to get to work, in case of s state shutdown.
I kinda laughed when they gave them to me last week...
but now it seems like I may actually need them.

These governors who are shutting down everything are only adding to the shortages and the panic. They’re making the situation worse IMO. SO much of EVERYTHING comes from California. Shutting down California hurts the rest of the country, as much as it does California. I think this is a big mistake.

If you look at what is happening in Italy, shutting down CA may not be such a big mistake when it comes to "flattening the curve." However, the economic toll will be deadly.

I am expecting to get laid off today because I am the newest guy on the team. If that doesn't happen, my compensation will definitely be cut significantly. My bigger concern though is for my mother. She is 90 and lives in a senior independent living situation. Another resident in her facility just tested positive and went to the hospital. While independent living is a few steps up (health-wise) from a nursing home (as in WA state) they are still plenty vulnerable. She is one of the healthier residents (still walks a mile every morning) but that may not mean anything.

If this flu had wandered in across our southern border I doubt we'd have much of a response at all as it made it's way through the lower and middle classes, those segments of our population with little or no power to effect a response.

However, the Corona-virus got here riding First Class on International flights and the people infected are the wives of state governors, cabinet members, government officials, CEOs, and executives.

The Senator who chairs the Intelligence Committee liquidated $1.6 million of stock immediately after being briefed on the threat, and BEFORE any of the information was made public. The stock market took it's nose dive 2 weeks later. Another intelligence committee member also liquidated his stock after being briefed on the threat. We are all paying the price to save old rich white guys and their assets. Despite this threat - the largest and swiftest actions to date have been to sure up Wall Street.

The trouble with this is that the American Public will soon loose both it's fear and it's patience. This flu outbreak was identified in October of 2019 but fell on deaf ears because our self-absorbed Congress and Media industry (those institutions that are supposed to be guarding our interests and safety) made impeachment and political infighting their only priority.

Congress can only process the intelligence that is reported to them.
They cannot act on something they have no knowledge of.

And the media's job is NOT to ensure our safety.
Our job is to pass on the information we receive.

So "someone" didn't pass the information on...
didn't think it was important enough to treat it as such...
or didn't pass it on because it went against their own interests.

Remember, COVID19 is just the latest version of the virus.
All previous versions were not deemed a threat.
As soon as the media knew about it, we reported it.
Hindsight is 20/20.
It's easy to look back and point fingers as a Monday Morning Quarterback.

They're not shutting down everything.
They are still delivering / making / supplying the essentials.
Food, fuel, water, medical items, prescription drugs, etc.
Even in California, you can still go out and get basic supplies.

Well sure .. any viruses that end up in the river are going to go out of state at some point.

What about the dry cleaner? Is that essential? If you can’t pick up your clothes or get dirty ones cleaned, do you just buy more???... but you can’t because retail stores are closed. What if you work in a doctor’s office and your copy machine or printer breaks? Is that essential? No doctor’s instructions, test results, or payment receipts. So many other professions that support the essential services, it’s impossible to list. It’s all interconnected, so one non-essential business shutdown might impact other ESSENTIAL businesses. Do you shut down food packaging or bottling plants? Shutting down tech companies might mean no parts for essential services. I just think it’s a big mistake.

This is uncharted territory.
No one knows how do pull this off perfectly.
But we do know that limited interaction with large groups of people will help.
And we do know that it spreads much easier and much faster when we don't.
I think the BIG mistake would be doing nothing, and HOPING it'll all go away.

Apparently they had enough knowledge to dump their stocks before informing the public.

And the media's job is NOT to ensure our safety.

The media's broadcasting licenses are all subject to: "the public interest, convenience, and necessity."
It's a moral imperative, and they're failing miserably.

..or didn't pass it on because it went against their own interests.
At least you admit the obvious lack of objectivity and public interest.

As soon as the media knew about it, we reported it.
I think you mean: as soon as your editors could no longer ignore it...[/quote]

Here’s my take... We have Constitutional rights. Declaring Marshal Law, which essentially is what these Governors are doing, they’re denying people their Constitutional rights... and for what? 256 people have died so far. 49 yesterday. Double than that number die each and every day (on average) in automobile accidents. We haven’t shut down the country, nor have we even shut down a single highway.

We’ve had pandemics before. We’ve had worse contagious diseases. None of these past diseases have ever caused a complete shutdown of the economy.

Granted, we had very limited and in some cases erroneous information about the virus coming from China. But the mainstream media has, IMO, over-hyped this disease. Yes, it is quite serious for the elderly and anyone with a weakened immune system, but recent statistics show this is a mild flu for 80% of those who contract it. Children are the least affected. The actual mortality rate may end up closer to .03% than the original 3.4% predicted. Is it possible we over-reacted? I say yes.

Some will argue that over-reacting is better than under-reacting. Is causing the collapse of the economy, with thousands of people losing their jobs OK?... What about Kansas, where there has been just one death, or Oklahoma with 2? Is shutting down large cities the right thing to do? The Governor of Oklahoma has not done what the governors of California, NY, and Illinois have done, but city mayors are ordering businesses closed and people to shelter in place. Mayors over-riding your Constitutional rights. How is this legal? I think we’re going to find out that, just is we did during WWII when we put Japanese Americans in internment camps, that the actions be undertaken a illegal. I also think they are unnecessary.

We can armchair quarterback this all we want. None of us are epidemiologists. I do have a good understanding of the underlying math though and it is frightening. The big unknown is how far this has actually spread. We were woefully unprepared to stay ahead of this. South Korea had over 200K people tested before we had 1000. I know several people now with family members showing symptoms that have been told they "DO NOT QUALIFY" for testing according to CDC standards. What kind of BS is that? What about all the people they had contact with that are now spreading the virus unknowingly? Only time can tell at this point. However, our economy is already doomed for the next few years.

I think the West Virginia having no cases Or now the fewest... Is a farce. The reality is they simply have tested the fewest.

While this is crippling our economy, the fear is that if it gets passed at normal rates, our health system won't be able to handle close to all of the serious cases and millions could die. That could be worst case scenario, but doesn't seem impossible.

If we can slow it down, it will at least give us some options.

Our Government has failed it's people. It has been taken over by Corporate Greed, and is now a Crony Capitalist country. I believe we were better equipped to manage a Pandemic 30 years ago compared to now! I believe they cut funds, and did not bother keeping a large stock of Medical supplies, and equipment just in case of a crisis.

"Failing to Prepare is preparing to fail" - This situation is the greatest evidence of that statement.

...And we consider ourselves the greatest country in the world. ...The result has been nothing short of PATHETIC in dealing with this situation.

Maybe, just maybe the a$$holes in charge, and the billionaires will actually bring back manufacturing of medical supplies, equipment, and other necessary items back into our country. ...And maybe our government will put serious funds into PREPARATION for when this situation occurs again.

By the way...Did anyone notice that during this Pandemic, the Chinese People seemed to have plenty of FACE MASKS available, and on hand? ...Where are the face masks manufactured? ...In China!

Also, Governor Cuomo of NY was on TV. He mentioned that face masks whole sale for the state government use to cost just 80 cents a mask for N95 masks. NOW the manufacturers have raised the price to $4 per mask. The government has no choice but to pay it, and acknowledges that it is price gouging.

Thi has occured because private companies wanted cheap labor, and overall costs, so they decided to manufacture it all in China. ...Now look who holds the cards on this product? THE CHINESE! ...And there is nothing we can do about it until we decide to start manufacturing our own N95 masks!
