Office dilemma

Maybe you're right but he could create an annoyance. For the sake of a signature you could avoid drama

It's done, we moved out yesterday evening. We're looking around at other spaces but in no hurry. Booking season is over and I don't expect any real volume of inquiries until the fall.

My initial thought was to go ahead and pay him for another month but this morning I had some clarity and thought, we don't have any meetings lined up and I have no intention on giving him another $500. I'm headed over this evening to clear everything out and will leave the key under the door.
Good for you, nothing beats a quick clean exit.

I opened my business out of my house. But got an office within a couple of years...in1984......One of the best business decisions ever. I'll ALWAYS have an office.

I still use my home office. Don’t make enough money to have an office somewhere else, but I’ve always wanted to have one. I wouldn’t want to scare a client off by brining them into my home office.[emoji1] Most of my clients have offices, so I go to theirs. If you do weddings (and I don’t) an office probably makes sense, as you’re meeting with couples that are not likely together during the weekday.

I'm really kinda torn. The first year, we had a fair number of meetings, and those meetings always translated into bookings, mostly for our photo+DJ packages. In the past year, I've noticed a drop-off in people who actually want a meeting. Many are booking these larger packages just like our smaller DJ-only packages, over email. If we run into a good space then we may pull the trigger again. If not, we'll just see how the bookings go. Keep in mind that I'll be focusing a lot on the venue, which a Nashville office will never benefit. It just all depends on how demand goes over the next year. There's also another on-demand office space opening in our town. It would undoubtedly be a lot cheaper, but we lose the large print displays. It's a tradeoff.

Office space sucks in today's world for our profession. No need for it in our line of work. Just an added expense.

The ONLY Reason i would pay to rent a office is if I was also using the office as a storage space for all of my equipment. I pay $200 a month right now for a 10x15 storage unit. That expense SUCKS. Only option that I have though at the moment. The only plus about the storage space is that I can pull my car right up to it, anload it in and out pretty quickly. I'ts a secure facility as well. Where as if I was storing stuff in my basement at my house, I would contend with multiple trips up a narrow stairway and through my kitchen, and another 60+ feet to my vehicle.

I have thought about purchasing another SHED for my DJ equipment to be stored in my yard, BUT then I will for sure be dealing with potential break ins in the future.

At some point I may decide to go the Shed option though...If storage space prices go up much more, I may be forced to find an alternative.

Just met a realtor and look at a space, in the building next to our old building. Looks like it will be an upgrade as the building is maintained better and with a better layout. Will let you guys know when we find out. Told them we'd like to take it.

So will there be a Ryan Events North and Ryan Events South? :)

I think I'm going to focus on Alabama. We'll keep taking photo+DJ gigs in Nashville. If we double-book I'll just use one of my local DJs to cover Nashville and an Alabama photog to shoot down there.

How long will it be before you are up and running booking weddings down in Alabama? Will you be able to book weddings in 2020 summer and fall? Or are you really looking at 2021 at this point?

Are you going to move down to Alabama in the next 24 months, and leave Nashville?

If you are going to be booking weddings down in Alabama next year then I would not opt for an office in Nashville at this point. If you are going to be MOVING down to Alabama all together in the next 24 months, then I certainly would not get another office for sure.

IF you are quitting the day time job, and looking to operate business in BOTH markets for the long term, THEN it is probably worth it to get into another office in Nashville. You will be doing a lot of traveling during wedding season if that is the case though once your venue gains traction and is getting booked every weekend.

My hope is to be booking for 2020. I expect to be fully functional with bathrooms and HVAC by next Spring. Will likely add a bridal cabin next summer. As for moving, can't say at this point. Too many unknowns.

Rick just out of curiosity how long a drive is it from your place to the new venue?

Do you have a place to stay without putting out family there? or will you plan on driving it?

Plenty of room at mom/dad's house. In fact, I think they'd be a bit offended if we didn't stay there. My plan is to always drive in the day before an event.

There were a few days when I had 3 hour one-way commutes to/from work (Stamford, CT), so I guess an occasional (for now) job 3 hrs away isn't horrible.

Nice to have that option... til its every weekend... hope everyone is truly prepared for that inevitability ... if this thing takes off.. your parents spare bedroom may end up your primary residence 4 days a week

Bottom line, it gives me the perfect excuse to spend more time with my aging parents. It likely won't be more than a couple of times per month and if it does better than I expect, I have the option of retiring from the day job and moving back home. The drive is an annoyance, that's all.

I'm trying to make myself more available to help with their care. My main goal here is to allow my dad to die in his home without being thrown into a nursing home. Sorry if that sounds morbid but losing my brother in January changed my perspective, a lot.
