So I picked up a couple of new toys:

A Zipper (ADJ Megapixel clone) $179 USD
ans a Chauvet Line Dancer LED 129 USD

I'm in the midst of programming them for a wedding on the 30th....I'll post some photo and video...

Both appear well built....I like what the Line dancer does; it'll be a nice compliment to the Tri Phase....

Anyone looking for a Vue 6? Kinta, Starball II or 2, old school ADJ H2O,Vue 3, Elan ????

That doesn't work for scanners, unless your sliders call up some random built-in chase. Without programming, your lights are nowhere 'the show' they could be. That's like buying a convertable, but never letting the top down.

DMX gives you the flexibility to put the light exactly where you want it with regard to moving heads and scanners, as well as select color, gobo, and light intensity.

By planning scenes for different songs, you get a wider variety of lighting features.

Sure, the auto programs work fine----but a programmed light show simply blows the audiences mind!

Please excuse the terrible soiund on the video--the camera could not handle the low frequencies , so the sound is horrendous. But the lighting ( fully DMX controlled ) looks pretty good I think.

Hey Steve,

I am just starting with DMX for my shows. How do you go about "programming" (for lack of a better word) for each song. Do you go in phrases (like chorus-verse-chorus) or do you start at the beginning and go from there? Do you time the chases to the song and if so how do you cue it up?

I am right at the point of setting up chases and im just not sure how to tackle it.

Thanks!

I don't set up "programs" for various songs....I'm talking programming scenes and running the programs on sound active....i,e. with my insignia barrel scanners, I have a chase where I'm using just the white gobo; strobing.....When i want that effect, I hit the applicable chase button....

Precisely what I do too....

For a mobile it would be way to tedious to try and program even just one or two songs for a particular show..... altho with PC DMX control it is possible to have infinate amounts of programed chases it would be completely to time consumeing to do unless requested....

So like Steve I program scenes that I can call up and most of them are based on sound active programs built into my lights with the exception of my scanners which I just run sound active from the program which works pretty good and you see this in the last video I did......

so basically your scenes are groupings of lights "doing something cool" and you just switch back and fourth between them as desired? And by being on sound active they follow the music so they never really do the same thing twice?

In a nutshell, yes.

Assumeing that your lights have built in sound active programs that are accessable via dmx.

With my wash, I simply program various colours as scenes. My controller has an audio in, the mixer a zone out; so that's how my washes work. With the Chauvet Line Dancer LED, you can program it to go Sound active....I could simply run it sound active off a Co pilot( as witht a Vue 3). With some lights you don't ned to run them DMX..

If I want to run the macros on my Zipper (Megapixel Clone) I have to run the fixture in sound active..

You have to be very careful with certain types of lights...

Which controller do you use? I've been looking for one that has that feature. The built-in mic on my Chauvet Obey is WAY too sensitive and I haven't found any way to tame it yet other than turning down the music and we all know that ain't happenin! :sqlaugh: I might have to modify it and install a potentiometer if I can figure that out. I would prefer to have a line level audio input.

I have a Chauvet DMX50A..It's 4 years old and from what I researched, Chauvet never made another controller with an audio in (rca); even other model that year. I've had to open it up and do some resoldering twice.

Don't know why they've all gone on board mics....

I winder if you could replace the onboard mic element in a controller with an rca in plug?

I wish I could find another one.....

I have a Chauvet 50 A also. One of the features I loved was the RCA jack input for audio. I currently use MY DMX software by American DJ, and the main audio input is sorely missed.

My American DJ lights do have audio control accessible by DMX sliders, an I have used it, but it is no where the same effect that the 50A could produce in sound active mode.
