New Facade

The facade came from Milin Designs I think. I was interacting directly on Facebook with the manufacturer. You can basically pick whatever of their designs and frame options you want. It shipped straight from China.

Funny you ask about the table... I bought a 4 foot table so it would sit tighter behind the facade. But the SZ felt too big for the first time... It has me reconsidering my stance on the Pioneer DDJ 1000 SRT...

That will be for another post. But this was way tighter than I wanted for my work space:

I looked at and played with this controller (DDJ-1000SRT) today. While it is smaller, the decks didin't feel as solid as the SZ / SZ2. They felt cheap and breakable. IMO, the Denon Prime 4 felt pretty solid.

How about the DDJ SB3? Considerably smaller. Jog Wheels are a nice size. Good features. it has a smaller foot print.

While the SB3 is a decent controller, it does not offer everything the full size controllers do (SZ / SZ2) nor is it as accurate, imo. At 1/10 the price, it's lacking alot.

Here's a comparison chart if you're interested - note where the SB3 falls and where the SZ / SZ2 falls (and where the 1000 falls). This is significant because of the differences between what he's using and what you suggested as an alternative.

I played with the 1000 and didn't like how the platters felt. The Denon Prime 4 (which has similar options to the 1000, SZ and SZ2) is in the same price range, and did feel solid. That was my observation (I was really concerned about the platters).

The SB3 is way under-featured for me to consider as my main controller. It could be a backup at best.

No booth output which I use at 90% of my gigs. Only a single Mic input. And I'm on my pitch faders all night... so I really don't like the super short throw pitch faders on a compact controller like that.

I could use that unit, and have actually. But it won't be the main thing for me.

I'm surprise to hear Tig's feedback about the platters on the 1000 SRT because that seems to be what everyone else loves about that unit. Lots of DJs seem to prefer the mechanical platter style over the contact driven style. I'll find out for myself since I ordered one. But I hope it doesn't feel cheap or I'll send it back and retain my SZ instead and solve the problem a different way.

Should have placed the little lit trees on your subs in front of the poles .. would have made the tops look like they were hanging in space ..

Matches the uplight 'covers'. The yellow color helps with the white / gold.

Ross, did you play with the SRT yet?

I did - had it out in the field for the first time last night actually. Against the SZ2 I'm kind of indifferent in terms of their actual use. The color effects are better on the SRT. But unless you use the Serato FX, the functions are all basically the same.

The jogs I think are a preference item whether you like the mechanical pressing of a traditional CDJ versus the connective versions on most controllers. When I practiced with it (briefly) a few times I had to remind myself. I was dragging the platter back, but not adding enough pressure to activate the mechanical contact. So it's forcing me to be a little bit more deliberate with my hand pressure. But I didn't run into that issue.

I also liked that I could see the color of my hot cues in the color LCD screen on the platters. Super minor, but I think that's a nice touch to know where in the track I'm cue'd up.

The main thing for me was just the space savings on the table, which it achieved well.

The 'issue' I was speaking of was the platters wobbled/wiggled vs the SZ2, where they seemed more solid. It almost seems that the mount for the platter is centered around the screen, allowing the platter to move sideways (wiggle, wobble, whatever word you like). It could have also been the specific one I played with.

I am glad to hear that you like it and are using it - so maybe it was a flop.

Have you played on CDJ platters? When you put pressure on them, they definitely move. But I think that's by design so that you're getting some of that "wax" feeling. But the SZ platters definitely don't do that.

If I’m not mistaken the cdjs and the sz modes each have a tension knob that controls how tight or loose the jog wheels are. Not sure if that affected your experience based on the settings

I think he's talking more about how the platter sits versus how loose it spins. Both units definitely have a tension adjustment on how loose you want them to spin.

Yeah, this is more of .. the platter moving (kinda like jello, moves side to side ... doesn't feel solid) vs how it spins.

Did no one notice that Ross did not sit his setup dead center to the wall behind him?? That's a huge error in my OCD mind....:sqlaugh::pillwink:

Seriously Ross....a beautiful and clean setup..well done!!

I think I had the front edge of the facade dead on the center of the dance floor. But the floor itself might have been slightly off center to the wall. It was pretty close either way :)

Thanks for the kind words, I was proud of the way it looked.

You should be. I like this look way more than one with lights behind it...way more elegant.

Are you gonna get any more colored covers for this facade?

If I have clients that are interested in something other than what I have, I'll definitely entertain adding to the inventory. But between a white, black and semi-rustic look... I'm hoping that I have enough facade options to keep most of my clients happy for a bit.
