Here is the latest thing about that event. Today is Thursday and the event is supposed to be tomorrow on Friday April 26th. It went from a graduation party to now a wedding. He called the guy up his friend and he told my partner he had to talk to his sister. So basically he was looking for a freebie because they are friends and my partner decided no way. He decided he could give a discount but not do it for free.

So kill that one and I totally agree with my partner. Especially when someone is playing games.
If you had a contract, none of this would be an issue.

I can go back 10 years of gigs and not have near the drama combined that you do on any given gig or even the ones you don't book...apparently I lead a pretty boring life

You don't bore us THAT much ... :)

How do you have a contract drawn up with details when you haven't been given any details about the event? You first need to know details about the event. Type of event, date of the event, time for the event, location for the event and so on. So nothing concrete was given. You also can't make someone give it to you. Either they cooperate with you or they don't, which it's time to move on and look for someone else who is seriously looking to book a DJ.

youve referred to this as a gig for your company for weeks now... first lesson... a gig isnt a gig...or something to even mention until you have a contract... you essentially have had a bizarre and fruitless inquiry on your hands this whole time

It's simple really, "if you'd like to reserve that date, let me get a few details from you so I can get a contract out and the date reserved". If someone else (like your partner) is taking events without contracts, that's your problem for tagging along with him and letting that be acceptable. Put your foot down. If it's your event, your name on the check, your equipment, your talent...."I need to get a contract so we're all set". See how easy that is. Even works with the partner.

We don't leave the house without a contract. It's not rocket science. It's protecting us and it's protecting the customer. Our liability insurance requires we have a contract or they won't pay if there is a claim.

You all are missing it big time. There was no info given other than the date of the event and type of event which got changed. So how do you have a contract to work with and there's nothing concrete to put on the contract? Understand now. It wouldn't work anyhow because the event type was changed from one thing to another. So the contract would have been voided for that reason. Never mind the amount to be paid to do the event.

Here, I'll type slowly so you can keep up.
you...talk....to....the....potential....client...and.....get.....the....information....necessary.....to.....complete....a.....contract....

If you had a contract and discovered the event was a wedding instead of a birthday, what would it matter? You show up and play music for the contracted amount of time. You can't claim a wedding requires more planning because you've done none anyway.

It’s quite simple. You tell them that nothing is reserved without a contract and retainer. If they want you they’ll get you the details ASAP. The problem is you’re acting desperate by trying to reach out to them for info... The one thing you said you didn’t wanna do. So your partner should cease communications with the guy and only respond if they reach out to him with the proper info and sign a contract. Do you notice no one else having these issues?

You didn't have a contract .. SO YOU DIDN'T HAVE A GIG !! But if you can play music at a party, you can play the same music for the same price at a last minute wedding .. so either you do it with the partner, or you don't and stop bellyaching about it.

wrong again. I have done weddings before. Again details were very sketchy at best. Besides I just found this out one day before the event. So it wouldn't work anyhow regardless of who was actually performing the event.

you have lost nothing because you invested nothing. you never HAD the event booked. you had a prospect. you neglected to get details. Yeah, you can try to throw your 'partner' under the bus, but it's obviously the norm to handle inquiries and supposed events that way, so that brings it back to YOU. I didn't say you've never done weddings...I said if you agreed to play from 8-midnight, why does it matter the reason? Same equipment, same library, same guy behind the microphone, same guy behind the camera. I don't know why the reason for the 4 hours of playing music makes it suddenly impossible to do the event...other than there was never any actual agreement to do an event to start with.

I like to have an idea of the type of event I'm asked to do so I have idea of what is expected of me. Just like it's not my event. So I can get as much details as I need to do a good job. Having the right music to do the event.

We did a wedding on a days notice. Got the contract signed and retainer. Who ever was supposed to do the wedding called the morning before the wedding and canceled.

You did a wedding on a days notice - but you can't seem to do whatever this event is on a several week notice?
