Do you have a contract and retainer/deposit. I mean if they respect you, and you want a better crowd... you should be operating with that.
This is a family event I'm doing this for. I have over 6 months before this event is to happen. I've done enough events for the family I know basically what music they will want and far as the time for the event, not a biggie with the family.

I'm careful with someone I don't know. We used to go anywhere to do an event for anybody. We stopped doing that because we did questionable events in some dangerous places for people we choose not to deal with today.

As far as music goes some clients don't care if you play the songs with the curses in them and some will get highly upset if you don't. I've said this before, safety first today.

So maybe u shouldnt post it as a shining example of "how you roll" or how you get respect.... if it isnt really that at all... its for a friend...and its most likely free...

If he expects others ('partners') to operate with that, then he also needs to operate with that. Of the 6 items that he asks to proceed with a contract, he only has 4 answers.

Reread what I said. I'm not worried about the other 2 things. I will get them long before the event date for sure. Not the week of.

That's right - reread what you said ..

Let me say this. When a potential client contacts me I have 6 basic questions. What type of event it's going to be, where is the event to take place, what time is the event (that's so I get to know how many hours is the event), the date of the event how many people are expected to attend the event and what styles of music do you want at the event.

This so I can get a feel to see if I want to do the event before we talk about a price.
Considering you are missing 2 of those 6, how did you come up with a price? If you have not discussed a price, then how can you possibly have a contract? If you have no contract, then what is the point of this thread?

Procedures, contracts it’s business 101. As judge Judy said you have to have a meeting of the minds. Have you and your partner ever sat down and discussed who has what responsibilities, and wrote it down? If you have not it explains why are you having difficulty getting information from the client, you can’t even get information from each other. Everything should be spelled out who does what and what you need. Personally I hate partnerships, I had a 50-50 partner early on. I bought him out, he worked for a fee and I handled all of the business business dealings. We both ended up happy. I work with quite a few individuals, there is always one leader, everyone report to him, everyone gets paid via the procedures we have implemented. Don’t follow the procedures and rules you’re out. One major rule is you get all the event Info up front, Time, date, location, venue, is it a straight roll in, and etc, before a price is agreed to by all parties. Then it is all put into a contract for each event. Another option is to get an agent or business manager and let him handle all that stuff, but if you aren’t making enough money that won’t work. I also with a couple of agents beside booking my own, they handle all of the client contacts. Much less stress but you always have to deliver.

I should have said in the beginning he told me someone he knows contacting him about doing an event on April 26th. He then said he thinks it's a graduation party. It shouldn't be he thinks. He should have known the type of event it is the first time the person contacted him.

The only 2 things missing is the time for the event and the music I'm to play at the event. So I'm way ahead of the game. Understand now. That's the respect I get. I'm not trying to get info at the last minute.

That is not a show of respect.
I'd bet there are a whole lot of OTHER details that you don't have yet...
you just haven't realized it

No that's it. Seriously. I can't think of anything off hand right now. If something else does come up I won't be getting it last minute. That's my point sir.

The only other thing I can think of which is part of the music is the entrance song her daughter wants when she comes in. I can even drive there to check out the room the event will be in.

Might be a good idea so you know how many subs and amps for the 50 people in the small room and the best place to set them up. Less surprises that way, and the venue might have a contract with the times of the event as well so you can find out what time you can load in all the equipment, what times they plan to host the event and how much time you have to load out at the end of the night.....might want to ask where the best place to park is, as well, so no surprises with transportation at the end of the night.

Mix do you have a singed contract and deposit for the family party you think you are doing in October? If not then you are no better than your partner.
I don't think I'm doing the event. I AM DOING THE EVENT! No this is a freebie. I'm doing this on the strength of me. I know you DJ God would never do that.

It doesn't matter if you know that you are doing the event or not - the question was, 'do you have a signed contract and deposit'? Without a contract, you have nothing - (yes, even free events may need a contract).

So you're paying for the party in the park. You're paying for this event in October. Things are certainly backwards in some parts of NJ.

FWIW, 'doing this on the strength of me' doesn't pay bills or buy things, like equipment.
