But do you have a contract and a deposit
I will have the daughter sign a contract to satisfy the insurance company. As for a deposit, I call it a retainer and there will be none. This is a family event and my gift to her mother is me being the DJ. I just want to get some good pictures and video of the event.

Another free event. You’re on a roll. If you wanna keep working for free I could always use another roadie.

I know others won't agree but these are people who are just like my immediate family. My best friend, his wife and others will be there. Not sure who all will be there. I certainly expect their mother to be there, the other sister and other family members. It's going to be a blast!

I forgot to say that I hear others suggesting I should have gotten the contact info and communicated with the person myself. I didn't think of that. I just was thinking I don't want to step on my partners toes.

If you are in a partnership and you are doing the lions share of the work what do you need a partner for?

I don't think anyone cares that you are doing freebies but you need to realize to have a business you need to at some time make money. I'm doing two charity gigs in the next couple of months where I donate my fee back and get a tax receipt...It was dates where I wasn't booked and they worked around my schedule. I get the write off they get some music. I also do 10 a year for an organization for the disabled for very little money. It's a group that is very special to me and it's also a great training ground for new DJ's I rarely do it myself anymore. I've also booked many other gigs from that one over the years including weddings, birthdays a major event for Special Olympics in June all at at full price.

I'm also doing a wedding for another DJ in August as a trade off I do his he does mine simply because there is no sense in handing him money to hand back to me

If you just want to DJ then keep on the road you are going. You're not hurting anyone by working for free except maybe yourself. If you want to run a business then changes need to be made. I just hate seeing you get sucked in by everyone that wants a free DJ and your 19 partners and their significant others

You have a billion reasons for why you can't do something - and that alone is the number one reason for why you can't do anything. You've heard this several times before - YOU are your number 1 roadblock.

You can't do a damn thing about someone not supplying you with any details about an event they are having. Either they give it to you or they don't. You can't make a person give you details about an event they are having unless you pull out a gun threatening to shoot them.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY YOU HAVE PROBLEMS.
Tig gave you a very valuable bit of information...
and instead of understanding what he is trying to say....
you only applied his statement to THIS ONE INSTANCE.

I think he was trying to suggest (as most others have)
that you stand back, and take a close look at your situation.
If you would stop depending on your partner for EVERYTHING...
and pursue your own gigs...
YOU would be in complete control, and be able to handle things better.
But keep in mind that it's a lot more work (for more payoff)
and you won't be able to use your partner as a crutch, or as an excuse.

Yes I’ve done events for family... including direct relatives (not “like” immediate family), as well as the wedding for my best man at my wedding and numerous more over the years.. all at a significant discount like 50% off or something of that magnitude... never free. I’m doing my wife’s cousins wedding in October for a discount of 30%, and all they did was thank me endlessly for being so thoughtful and kind.

Free would make anyone happy, but that doesn’t mean they wouldn’t be happy if you said you’d do it for half your price or something similar if you feel it is a necessity to do it for less.

I feel sorry for the wall.

Can we see just one page of your contract?
You'd more likely to Sasquatch with a Leprechaun on its shoulder, riding a unicorn that is shooting $100 bills from its horn.

And before you think about it, I've seen the following real image but there is no leprechaun or $100 bills, so my statement stands.

My true friends know if I'm not playing I likely wont be there LOL

I don’t even know where to start. I can see not charging your brother, sister, mother or father. But not charging because they’re going to be at an event or its someone you consider like immediate family. Gez, I did almost all of my friends, cousins, friends weddings, their parents' second weddings, family reunions, picnics you name it. Using your logic I’d never get paid. Just last week I get a call from a very close family friend (still working on the gig report) for this past Saturday to DJ a last minute wedding. Now our families are so close I bring my kids to their yearly reunions & Parties I DJ. And when I finish playing I throw on a mix and sit down with the family for another hour or two. And they pay, they wouldn’t even think about asking or accepting a free event. It all a manner of what you think you are worth and what they think you are. Close friends are usually the first to pay you although they usually don’t expect to pay full price. It’s like when you start selling Amway the first thing you do is sell it to your family and friends first. I thought you said you wanted better events & to make more money? If you just want to play music for free and spend way more than you make, that’s a hobby. And there really nothing wrong with that but I do believe most on the board are in this to make money.

Other than the partner mix’s biggest problem is his ego, remember he’s the best DJ, well at least if you like old house music and live within a 5 mile radius of his house.

I've offered a lot of discounts with my "Friends and Family" plan.
I have also done two weddings for family...a niece and a nephew.
Didn't charge them a dime...even though I had to drive 6-hours to get there.
My mom and dad took care of my travel, accommodations, and even slipped me a few hundred before I left.
Also offered to do a freebie to the guy who has given me free tux rentals for more than 30-years.
He flat out REFUSED to let me do it for free.
If people really care about you, and are not just taking advantage of your good nature...
they will take care of you, and make sure you don't go home empty handed.

I recently offered a 50% discount to my cousin and his wife... they are notoriously cheap...and it was a Sunday gig... They seemed to be still uneasy with the price ..lol...and asked if they took the lights off what the price is... lololol... i knocked a bit more off and they booked...lolol

its funny...sometimes ive done discounted stuff for family and when i look in the envelope its more than i would have ever asked for...other times they make you regret any discount at all...and want to get their moneys worth out of ya and squeeze you dry...

im sadly still compelled to offer family discounts... not sure why

Personally my 2 favorites is deep underground house music and oldies but goodies. The deep underground house music is about being able to play stuff you've already played 5000 times like Follow Me

Sorry I meant not playing the same old tired stuff I play regularly.
