So...normally the tuesday before each weekend gig (i have a 50th anniversary Saturday) i open my cord bags and reorganize after the cluttered mess of the last gigs breakdown

i encourage any helpers i take with me to just toss cords into the bags willy nilly at the end of the night...not only is it a time saver....but... i must say... my favorite thing to do is reorganize those bags each time... its become ritualistic for me... its more therapeutic than a spa day.... i take my time and make it perfect ... its my happy place...lol

sorry... just enjoyed my cord bag time this morning and had to share.. :djsmug:

Enjoy your happy place!
For me, I have a cord briefcase.
And even though I take the time to wrap cords properly at the end of each gig...
they still come OUT of the briefcase as if I threw them in there willy-nilly.

The OCD in me appreciates that. But unless I had a double, I always wrapped my cords the RIGHT WAY, velcro'd the circle so it would not unwrap and placed them gently in their allotted spot in my cord/accessories tool bin.

Now THAT was theraputic at the end of an event knowing they'd be that way at the set up of the next event.....aaaaahhhh....:sqlaugh:

our cord boxes are 2 approx 2x4x1.5'deep boxes on wheels (actually stacked so one is a drawer under the other. All cords get put away properly so they are ready for the next event....exception being an odd corporate event with volunteers where we will re-wrap cables afterwards anyway if we can't prevent them from trying to help with that part. The cord box is packed near the middle of the truck, so difficult to unload far enough to repack it unless absolutely necessary.

i Wouldn’t have an issue with your idea... if it wasn’t for the countless weekends where there are back to back gigs. What do u do in those cases?

Depending on how fast we need to get out...if i have time at the venue we wrap them that night... or ive been known to unload the cord bags and do it during breakfast... so no issue with that

Why are you rushed getting out of a venue?
Around here there are some venues that only give you an hour to breakdown... also for those that work daytime events at venues, sometimes you're rushed if the evening dj is rushing to get in and start setting up.

My only advice is to try to get any helpers to do it the correct way from the start. It is hard to break a bad habit, very hard. When I started there was no one to show me the correct way, hell pretty much we were creating & figuring things out as we went along. Back then no internet & books to guide you. After 20+ years of doing it wrong it’s very hard to teach & get everyone to do it correctly. Surprising some on the A/V crews & other groups on college campuses do know how to wrap cables. One time I got the 15 min lecture from a guy helping us on the importance of doing it correctly. I made my son listen too. Hey, if someone right, they’re right’

Just like we put setup time requirements in our agreement, we also put that we need a certain time for load out as well. It's never been a problem for us with any venue. But, I certainly understand that different venues have different requirements.

Whatever works for you... you certainly aren't wrong. I used to throw cables in the box and then realized it just took long and felt like double the work. I always felt that if my cables were a mess, what else was a mess...
