Weddings Most Hated Requested Songs

i had a pretty good dancefloor going this last weekend... though minimal support for stuff like uptown funk...weird... oddly packed floor for god awful venga boys (requested by this douchie guy).... but then...this older man asked my wife for the Hokie Pokey... ugggh...nooooo....but there WERE a few kids....so i waited for a good oportunity to destroy the dancefloor.... and played it.... suddenly the tables emptied and people of all ages were hokie pokeying...virtually the entire room...

whatya gonna do... hard to ever fully understand a crowd...

"We Are Family" and "Celebration" requests I hate because it reminds me of all the cheezy DJs wearing tuxedos from the first weddings I attended as an adult. I know "Family" will probably work but it feels like a crutch when there are so many other options. "Celebration" as a song I like, it's fun, the bass drum is solid, but it's almost predictable that it will be the first song out the chute with DJ Cheeze opens the dance floor. I'm attending my brother's wedding in March at one of those "all-inclusive" wedding venues and I expect both those songs and "I Gotta Feeling" to be played. :)

lol.... i hate them as well... but have went to them in a pinch to get a certain type of crowd on their feet... we hate them....but they are timeless floor fillers to so many people... id rather hear celebration over cha cha slide any day...but id also rather hear something that works for the entire crowd and not some obscure new pop song that gets 7 teenagers up and dancing and alienates the rest of the room.... i like to build trust with the older ones first...and save the second hour for the younger set....

All those songs are floor fillers because OTHER people like them .. and they only hear them at the weddings THEY attend .. so like every 3-5 years.

Theres a certain guilty pleasure in that... for the most part people arent music snobs like us... they want their entire music consciousness infused into an hour or two on a saturday evening.... theyve had a couple glasses of wine and dont want to decide...have i heard this before...it sounds familiar....wait...i dont know it....im going to my seat.... they want the songs they know by heart... id love to break new music....or dig deep in the crates to educate a crowd the way i did in my club days... but i have to check that at the door and be a servent to peoples most basic desires.... if i saw a mass exodus anytime i dare break into these songs i would obviously change my attitude... but ages 10 to 80 are out there whooping it up when they hear those familiar beats.... who doesnt like cheese? vegans? no thanks...give me an extra scoop of cheddar!

I hate the pretentious attitude some DJs have over the “cheesy” music. This music is popular and works because a huge age group recognizes and enjoys it very much, I prefer to give my clients and their guest a wonderful evening filled with songs they know and love, why stray from that because I am a music snob

I wish I did an event where I could play American Pie. That's one of my all time personal favorites. I just hate people requesting a song like Follow Me. I know when someone requests that song for me it's going to be a boring night. When they request that I want to tell them don't you have that song on at least 10 CDs? I know they are going to want to hear that same old stuff that I'm sick and tired of playing. Yet it's not about me. It's about what the people want.

I always loved that track but never had much luck with it on the dancefloor around here...played it in the club a few times

There is no doubt that guests at a wedding want to hear familiar songs. They want stuff that crosses generations and gets all of their family and friends on the dance floor. But there is a lot of music in that category.

When I'm talking about music with my clients, I talk about these types of songs. And my position is essentially that there is a fine line between a "classic" and "overplayed." For me, and the style I DJ with... Celebration fits into overplayed, where Signed, Sealed, Delivered is a classic. We Are Family, overplayed. Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody, classic.

More often than not, I hear something like "Oh, thank goodness!" when I say that.

I'm certainly not against playing those songs if my client wants them. But in a world with almost limitless choices, my personal style is to avoid the songs in that overplayed category if I can. Because while they may still work, they are polarizing. The people that don't like them, REALLY don't like them.

If you're not discussing this category of music with your clients, I'd recommend that everyone start, versus just assuming that only snobs are sick of those songs.
