Mixxx 2.3 Beta

I’m really convinced that Windows 10, regardless of the DJ software, SUCKS! Apple’s macOS is better, but still bloated, and then there’s the added cost of a Mac. If Mixxx 2.3 is as improved as claimed, I think a basic Linux install with Mixxx might very well be the way to go... at least for me. I like Traktor, but I’m really not getting much more in features over what Mixxx provides.

I have no issues with Win 10 .. they seemed to sort of fix the only issue I had and that was mandatory immediate updating.

Gettin’ ready to install Mixxx 2.3 Beta on my Zorin Linux laptop. The version of Mixxx I had installed was 2.2.1, which automatically updated to 2.2.4 after running the Software Updater. Version 2.2.4 is the latest stable version, and I’m tempted to play with it for a while before installing the Beta version.

The Software Updater is STILL running. Apparently, it has been a VERY LONG time since I last updated this computer. In all honesty, I have WAY too many computers for DJing, so it should come as no surprise that some of them are rarely used, if not neglected. I’ve got some time this week, so my plan is to get all the computers updated. And then I want to play around with Mixxx and see what it’s like. Version 2.2.1 was pretty good, so if this version’s better, that will be GREAT!

Previously, I had this computer set up to use with my DDJ-WeGO3, but I’m gonna see if I can get it working with my DDJ-T1. If I REALLY like it, then I’ll see how it works with my new Denon MC7000. Should be fun.😊

I'm still holding out for 1 package that will play music, music videos and karaoke .. I'm thinking I'll probably have to make the move to VDJ, since PCDJ (which I have) is a bit buggy in the version that plays video/cdg files.

I have all but given up on video. I have a everything I need to provIde it, but it hasn’t been a priority for me. I’m into downsizing and simplifying now. We’ll see how it goes.😊

I don't do a lot of video, but I have a collection .. karaoke I still do occasionally. Right now it's a separate program .. would like to a single app for all.

If it's a one off or for home use the free version of VDJ will do video very well but there's a watermark on the videos sorta like this

... And of course nothing is EVER easy. Seems the battery in my Zorin laptop is DEAD! Dead as in it won’t charge back up. It’s probably not worth buying a new battery, but the computer is configured, updated, and has all the software I want installed on it. To redo all that on another computer would take hours, so I ordered a new battery.

I went ahead and installed Mixxx 2.3.0 Beta. It works fine, but the power cord needs to stay attached while I’m using it... for now.

I'll believe that when I see it! But if it's so, I'll really miss the build updates!
Oh I’m still gonna build my Podium System. I’ve decided that even if I never DJ another event, I’m still gonna build it just for the fun of it. Part of that fun is posting my progress on this board and reading the critiques.😂

I signed up for a welding class so I can build my own metal frame. The class was canceled due to the pandemic, but it will be rescheduled. I suspect it will be late in the fall. I got nothing else scheduled, so when it happens it happens.😊

At least re-work something ... :)

Always wish I had learned how to weld. When I came home from Nam in 1970, I was renting an upstairs apartment from a guy who worked in the Port Jefferson LILCO Power Plant. One day we were shooting the breeze over a few beers in his garage, when I asked him "what's with the horse shoe hanging on the wall"? He hands it to me and explains it was for his welding certification to work on high pressure steam pipes. They gave him two sections of thick wall 4" ID high pressure pipe to weld together. After he was done, the pipe is cut lengthwise into 1" strips, each piece is bent inside out at the joint, and then put on a grinder. Any voids, you flunk! Gave me a real respect for the craft!! Still done today, but I believe now they just x-ray it.

They tried welding "robots" on the new Tapanze Bridge, but they (at least according to the x-rays of the joints) did not do as good as the humans.

OK... I’ve been playing with Mixxx 2.3 Beta a little bit over the past week and I have to say; it’s not bad. It’s gonna take a little getting used to, but it works. It actually seems to work pretty good. If I had never used Traktor, and started out with this software, I think I’d be pretty happy with it.

I ended up setting it up with my American Audio VMS 4.1 and running Mixxx on my Zorin Linux laptop. This configuration works just fine... if I just wanna be a bedroom DJ, but laptops just don’t work for me as DJ computers. If I was gonna try to use a system like this professionally, I’d have to do something different with the computer.

Would I be willing to use Mixxx as my primary DJ software? I’m not ready to say just yet. It has its appeal. The fact that it’s free has little bearing on my decision. I already own multiple licenses of Traktor... more than I need, so it could come down to one factor... the Operating System. Running on Linux means I have WAY more control of what’s on the computer, and how it performs. I think it’s much more reliable than Windows 10, and that’s saying something because Windows 10 is not too bad. At least I’ve never had the O/S corrupted by a power failure, which happened to me many times over the years with previous versions of Windows. The thing that appeals to me most is NOT PAYING MICROSOFT for anything!

So what’s next? I need to use it for a while... weeks at least. I need to stress test it as much as possible. Then, if I really like it, I might want to put a mobile system together that utilizes a computer I can comfortably work with. I have a Dell Optiplex 3030 AIO that would probably work well. I have enough gear around here to cobble together a pretty functional system. Not sure if the VMS 4.1 is the ultimate controller choice. It pairs with Mixxx nicely, but the darn thing weighs a TON! I love using it, but that’s the reason I got the Denon MC6000 MK2... smaller and lighter. I have some ideas.😊We’ll see how it goes. I need to work with Mixxx a little longer before getting serious about switching from Traktor.
