It seems to me that Mix should be earning at least 70% NET pay in this partnership. Maybe 60% NET IF his partner is the one who got the gig booked.

Such as what??? You seem to have the van, pay for the cell phones and all the gear? He seems to have his own controller and laptop and not much else. As we have said, you're more a roadie or the bus driver than a partner ..
Partner and partners gf are the ones that find, book and play the events.

These funds basically get cut in 3 with at least 2/3 going to the partner and Mix funding 100% of the equipment, vehicle, fuel, phones, etc, etc. To put things in perspective, the partner and his gf are finding, booking and playing the events. Without them, there is no work coming in - and no music (other than House) being played.

Using your logic, Ryder should get 70% of the pay if they move your equipment.

10+ years ago most of the weddings I did were in my county so traveling was minimal. When I decided to go on my own I had to expand distances to travel and a few were a little over 100 miles away. Anyway, I'll make the trip if I have to, but if I had a choice I would go for less distance.

Also 10+ years ago every wedding I did was at least 6 hours. Now days I try to keep them down to 5 hours. Furthermore, indoor weddings at a nice hotel are preferable to outdoor tent weddings. At a certain point I got tired of hot days with insects flying around.

And my business model is to keep it simple. I don't offer any add-ons except extra speakers or a 2nd system.

So nobody wants to do the high end Wedding at the presitgious over priced high end venue, and the chance to charge $2,650, and pay for assistants to help you deal with a night mare load in?

I guess us DJs just are not THAT ambitious, and dedicated to truly want those $2,000+ pay days... :)

I guess I am confused as to how thier partner ship works.

His partner just brings a controller, and laptop to every event, correct? Mix provides all the audio and lighting gear. He also provides the vehicle. They also BOTH DJ, or does only his partner perform as the DJ? ...So his partner is the one who is able to book the events? Or does Mix also obtain some of their gigs? But then again, Mix is the one with the phone and pays the credit card fees if a customer uses a credit card?

It's a strange partnership.

It DOES work like a ship ... the partner sits in the captain's chair and is the face of the operation and Mix pushes the tugboat around ... :)

Nobody wants to bite based on the framework you laid out. But the flaws in your framework are why you're getting mixed responses.

Every event basically has a spectrum of possibilities from simple to complex on production. Close to far on travel. As a hypothetical it's fine... but the reality is that you can tell what work this group is willing to do based on the types of gigs we are actually doing. And the level of production that is being sold.

High end djs typically want more for what you’re describing. Low end probably don’t have the capabilities despite the higher pay, and mid range just hasn’t responded on here I supposed

Mix does not accept checks (unless he knows you, in which case, it might be free) and is not currently able to accept credit cards - but the partners gf has no problem accepting either.

Based on what we've seen, the partner performs as a DJ 99% of the time. Mix is more than capable of doing his own events, but it's so much easier when someone else does the booking, scheduling, playing and funds chasing. Also based on what we've seen, the partner has a controller and a laptop, but no other equipment - and they both share the same music library (and possibly others).

I was going to respond to this post but why bother. You're going to decide anyway you feel no matter what I say. No I will say one thing. That event about accepting a check at the end of the event was a No No because because we had just met these people the day before. So I wouldn't accept a check under those conditions unless I knew the client very well. If it was enough days in advance to see if the check does clear, no problem. How do you know accepting a check the day of under those conditions they are not giving you a check from a closed account?

According to your contract they should have paid on booking or by cash before start time

you're absolutely 100% right. Honestly I wanted to use a contract for this one but I didn't want to get into an argument with my partners GF about this. It was bad enough that she insisted that she come to the gig and went off on me about an issue with the guys Lavalier mic he was trying to use. The volume was too loud and I was trying to quickly adjust the volume. She yelled at me for what happened. The real problem to begin with is if he wanted to use that mic, at the event he should have let us set things up while we were setting up.

Her excuse for coming with us is she said she was the one who setup the deal for us to do. I have a different feeling why she came.

Isn't she the one who bailed you out by being able to take a credit card too??

If the gf is now calling the shots as to whether you use a contract or not for your company...

The thing for me I didn't want to get into it with her. I wanted to keep the peace. Just that simple.

According to everything you said, she IS the one that setup the deal. She booked it and received payment. Had she not been there, you would not have been paid.

I already gave you one. Quit being greedy. LOL.

You did not show that anything I said was incorrect. .. nor did you give a reason of how nor why it's incorrect.

Keeping the peace and working properly seem to be two different things in your world. You don't seem to be uncomfortable, so carry on. If things were uncomfortable, you would stop putting yourself in these situations.

Honestly I don't know how things got taken care of as far as us getting paid. All I know I got my part. They tried to explain it to me. I wasn't sure what they were talking about. If need be my partner could have taken care of it but she was there and she did it. My point was not accepting a check from a client the day of. Only way I would do that is I would have to know the client personally and know I have nothing to worry not getting paid.
