I really like my current Dell Latitude 2-in-1 laptop, but at 5 years old it is showing its age. The warranty finally expired a year ago and now keyboard is becoming finicky. A good cleaning may fix that and I am not opposed to replacing the keyboard altogether. I am concerned that with only 8 GB memory and an older I5 processor newer applications may struggle. I sometimes see the words freeze momentarily on Karafun and I wonder if it is due to my PC. My other issues is that this PC has only 256 GB internal storage.

I get by on the storage by using a 512GB SDXC card (mostly for my music), a 2TB Dropbox account and a OneDrive account. Only a portion of the Dropbox account is mirrored on the PC but all of the Onedrive account is mirrored. I could reduce what gets mirrored on the internal drive but this would probably be just a stopgap measure.

My PC requirements are:
  • Under 3.5 lbs
  • 14" display - My work 13" Latitude is too small and my wife's 15" Latitude is too big
  • 1TB internal drive
  • Touch-screen with at least FHD resolution
  • Full-sized HDMI port
  • USB-C charging (to be compatible with the other laptops)
  • HDMI and USB-C ports on the same side of the PC (my wireless HDMI transmitter needs both)
  • SDXC slot preferred
  • Screen opens to at least 135 degrees (180 preferred)
  • 5-year no-fault warranty with next-day in-home repair
The warranty adds about 20% to the cost but I have always made good use of it with every laptop I have had in the past. I have had such warranties from HP and Lenovo and they all use the same local repair people. I have never seen such warranties offered when buying a laptop through a 3rd party (Costco, Best-Buy, etc). Maybe that has changed.

Right now the Dell Pro 14 Premium comes closest to my needs. The Pro line is basically the replacement for the Latitude line. It is just over $3K with tax for the options I want. It comes in at 2.5 lbs which is nice since I usually travel with two laptops. The HP EliteBook 1040 comes close but their max warranty is only 3-years. The HP X360 is also close but since it is a consumer model, it cannot be purchased with the on-site repair option. Lenovo offers a 4-year warranty and their Slim7i comes close to my needs. However, I feel a purchase of Lenovo is like an invitation for the PLA to peek at your stuff.

What other brands do you know of that offer next-day in-home service warranties?
