I just got a LATE booking for a wedding this Saturday.... But thats not the odd part ofcourse...

It seems that the bride and groom asked this ladies husband to do the music for their wedding... he apparently agreed...not realizing how hard it actually is ...especially as a novice...

So...here we are....today... 11th hour...and in a panic they contacted me....and now are paying a lot of money to save face...lol... i sorta felt bad for them....but at the same time...im glad they learned a valuable lesson about our worth as dj's. I also hope they return whatever gift they bought the couple...because they just gave them a whopper of a gift.

You da man today. It's always fun to get to put on the cape and play Superman.

lololol... im already regretting it.... the lady just told me that the only request the bride gave them was Endless Love.... i guess for the first dance.... she also isnt allowing me contact with the bride and groom...as my services are going to be a surprise gift....that being said...ive got to now deal with a middle man to get a LOT of pertinent information in a very short span of time.

Oh man, I'd stand her down over that. She needs to understand that you need to speak with the bride directly. Both to get a clear picture of what she (the bride) wants her day to be like and to put that bride's mind at ease that her event is in good hands. You do already have their deposit money, correct?

That sounds like a real PITA!!! That is going to suck. BUT...I guess they are your client in a way, and not so much the bride/groom. The bride/groom either did not have money to pay for a professional, or does not value DJs at all, and were prepared for a novice result anyway. So whatever you do will probably blow away their expectations for the music and entertainment on their wedding day.

yes... deposit was pay pal'd ... The way i see it... if they were planning on having an amateur friend do their music...they will be over the moon once they experience my show...lol....as long as i can get the basic requests im not going to overthink their timeline or anything... chalk this up to a last minute pay day and do my best to represent my company as best i can...

exactly! not ideal conditions for me...and obviously i dont want any attendees to look at me in a bad light... but... at the end of the day... they all got a HUGE upgrade! lol

I love to get these late, save the day events. And I especially like the idea of not a lot of micro-managing from the bride. You have my ideal situation.

All you really need is the first dance song. And if there are any parent dances, bride/father or groom/mother. A real good experienced DJ can step in take this event way beyond anyone's expectations.

You'll do fine crazychris, go out there with your confidence, music smarts, emcee talents and knock it out of the park. You don't need any further information.

Let me wish you good skills. I don't wish a DJ good luck when they have been doing this a long time. My thing for me is not just knowing the special dance songs for the formal dances but also the kinds of music they want for the reception so people will enjoy themselves and not make me look like the bad guy.

I can go in guessing what might work and go from there. I just would rather have some idea of what music to play so I have some idea of what I should play for this wedding. Right now you don't know if the bride and groom will want a lot of Country music, Hip Hop and R and B or whatever.

Since it is a wedding I would feel uneasy about asking guests for requests from them or going up to the bride and groom for their input the day of. It's one thing if you know the people who will be attending the wedding. It's another thing when you have no clue as to who the couple is or their guests.

I was just thinking about how much did the couple spend on their wedding before considering the entertainment side?

I had a real last minute wedding a few years ago at a high end venue in downtown Baltimore.

I was off on a Saturday in June and got a call at 10am to cover a 4pm ceremony and reception.

Their DJ who I knew woke up with the flu so he reached out to me.

He gave me the music for the ceremony, the names for intro's and requested music from the bride over the phone.

I did not tell the bride about the switch until AFTER intro's and 1st dance during dinner.

She was surprised but happy that it was a seamless move.

And it was a killer reception. So yes...it can be done.

I would require communication with the Guests of Honor. I value the importance of their celebration, as well as my reputation, more than any selfish desire or benefit to "SURPRISE" someone with a unauthorized, unapproved, albeit potentially better change in plans.

This reeks of deceptive cover of their asses.

Though i fully agree with you...and would never abide by this sort of scenario under normal circumstances (booked months ahead of time)... i think im gonna freestyle this one just for giggles... see if ive still got all my super powers...lol

There was nothing deceptive going on. Yes I took a chance by not telling the bride until after the event began, but I felt I'd prefer to NOT cause any possible stress until after a few MC steps had been taken and my skills established....hope that makes sense.

If they wouldn't let me talk with the couple, I'd insist on questions being forwarded. If they want to be the go-between, that's fine. But I wouldn't go into it without a clear timeline. If they don't want to choose specific music, that's fine. I don't need them to tell me what music works. But, knowing how the night is supposed to go is how I make sure that it happens.

Im actually getting a lot more info coming through than i first expected... we now have all the special dance requests and ive sent over a sample timeline for the client to approve... its not perfect but its coming together

My DJ pal had already spoken to this bride and gotten all the details weeks prior, so I had the info I needed.

The fact that I did not speak to her before the event was almost impossible as I only had a few hours.

Had she gotten a call earlier in the day saying her DJ was being switched, I'm sure that would of freaked her out.

I made a judgement call....hope you all understand....

Here's one I did recently where I had about 2 weeks' notice. The original DJ had double-booked (the client gave him a wrong date initially) and ended up passing it to me. You may remember me asking opinions about giving the gig back when his other date cancelled. In this case I was allowed to speak with the Bride but we did a facetime surprise for her (projected it on the wall) that had her in tears. Sometimes, these save the day things turn out wonderfully. With Mr. DJ Stud Chris, I'm sure this will be a winner of an event. BTW, here's the testimonial I got from the FOB:

You still have super powers. That's on them looking to take the cheap way out.
