Loaning out equipment

If you get a van and some gear you can get a partner like mix’s. Who owns nothing but uses the gear for free
Wrong sir. We both own stuff together. He bought a touchscreen PC to DJ with and he has other stuff as well.

Personally me I remember the last time I helped out a DJ was the guy that we used to do events together before he moved. I helped him out with doing a block party where he lived. He didn't have all the stuff needed to do the event and I supplied him with the stuff he needed while I sat on the sidelines while him and another DJ played for the event. Personally the DJs I associate with have been doing this a long time like me and don't need me to supply them with gear. They have plenty all by themselves. They may ask at time to come and play with them at an event and that's it.

You have this friend you said who borrows your gear at timesand you feel that friend may be using you. My question to you is how long has this DJ been doing this? I do need to say that depending on how long this DJ has been doing this and how much money they have might be a big factor at to why they don't havee certain things of their own so they don't have to borrow stuff from you. Now most of you know that DJ gear can be very expensive. Especially when you're talking good quality gear and not entry level gear. Let me just give an example. Those 2 Yamaha DSR tops I bought years ago with tax cost me $1,500 for the pair. Since then the price has gone up to $999.99 plus tax. Those Yorkville 801p subs I bought cost me $2,100 for the pair. So for all 4 of those speakers it cost me $3,600. Great buy for sure in my opinion. That's not including other things needed to DJ with. So my point is maybe this DJ doesn't have it at the moment to spend that kind of money to spend on gear. Not saying that he has to buy items similar to those but somethings may b e on their wish list.

Evidently you trust that this DJ knows what they are doing or you wouldn't loan your gear out to them. Just trying to get some here to be open minded. Some you have well over 20 years in this business, so it's no wonder you have the gear you do. Not every DJ can be that fortunate. My experience I didn't get the stuff I have now over night. It was over time. Do I want more? Of course but I know that's just my obsession talking. Somethings have to come first like bills. One big mistake that I made was taking out loans and using personal money to buy stuff with. I have to buy battaries for the cordless mics because next Saturday we have a job to do. To that doesn't count. That's a minimal purchase. I'm talking big ticket items.

So you want to adopt a new generation of bottom feeders to compete with ....using your own loaned out equipment?

Going into business of any kind requires a bit of capital ... if you want to be a dj....you get some gear... even if its modest stuff... or u rent out equipment legitimately until you can afford your own... you pay for it inevitably with future revenue.... or you go belly up...

by the time you are in a position to borrow gear in a pinch from your network of dj associates...u bring more to the table than you would ever need to borrow....meaning...you have the things they might need as well... and youre prepared for the give and take.

The scenario you paint is... a man with nothing but a dream and a touchscreen pc... who needs to borrow a makeshift missmatched jumble of beat up speakers and needs a halfwit with a van to haul it all in.... oh wait....

Sorry I should have said $999.99 each. My point being that depending on the level of DJ you are at a certain point can determine what you use to DJ with. I'm talking about in some cases it taking years to get high quality gear to do events with. My experience is buying stuff at times thinking I made a great choice only to find out I should have waited till I could afford better.

At time I bought those speakers, a salesman who knew me too well in GC tried to get me to buy a pair of those cheap Alto speakers that I remember if I'm correct were the first pair they made. Because of my many years of experience I knew to stay from those speakers because I would quickly get rid of them because they would not be what I really wanted to use to do events with. Now I have made emergency purchases buying something just to get by with for a short period just to have something to use for now.

I have had those speakers for years and although the boxes have taken a beating, i have never had an issue with them failing me.

Speaking of the DSR's. How did your refinishing job turn out on them. It's really crazy how you didn't take care of those speakers. It looks like they literally get thrown into and around the van?

And how does the PC help/benefit you? In other post you say that you don't use it. What other items has he contributed to your business?

What the hell are you talking about!? I pointed out that if you want top quality gear, it will cost some good money. They just don't give that stuff away. In the beginning you can either buy your own gear or ask to borrow someone else's gear. Normally starting out a Dj will buy stuff to get by with or just cheap stuff because they don't have the money to spend on better quality gear. Usually it's a trial and error thing. You make mistakes in the beginning buying cheap gear and if you stay around long enough and serious about what you're doing, you upgrade to better gear.

Having quality gear will sound better and last longer. Rarely the stuff needing to go to a repair shop. If you know what you're doing better gear will make your performance better.

You call the stuff I have old beat up stuff. I will put what I have against yours any day. I knew what I was buying when I bought the stuff from my friend and so far no complaints.

I have zero doubt that your muddled mess can produce a loud sound...and so can my butt cheeks... doesnt mean either of them have a place at a professional dj gig.

I will concede though....The throngs that showed up at your birthday party seemed super impressed.

What birthday party? Just because something is old doesn't mean it doesn't work well. I still have the original QSC 2450 I bought when I first came back and still working perfectly. Once the power button needed to be replaced and that's after 19 years.
