I have been meaning to post about this trick for leveling speakers for a while but kept forgetting till now.
I regularly encounter places where I need to put speakers on uneven ground. I have two techniques for dealing with this. The first is to place the end of speaker stand into a PVC or ABS pipe cap. This technique gives you about a half inch of lift for each cap. It also spreads the weight of the stand over a larger area so your stand won't sink into soft ground. My newer technique is to use small sandbags. These offer more fine tuning than the caps. I use 12" zippered pouches from Harbor Freight ($3) that are a little more than half filled with playground sand.

I actually put the sand into a ziploc bag before putting it in the pouch. This is just to prevent the sand from getting wet if I am on grass or wet soil. The pouch approach works with speaker stands or the bases of column speakers.
