Yesterday I have spent some time browsing through LD Systems Website looking at Photos/Videos/News of their awesome Worldwide Productions. http://www.ldsystems.com/index.htm & http://www.ldsystems.com/News/News.htm I have been to some Events including the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo where they were the ones responsible for the Sound and Video Productions. Their sound is always powerful yet natural.

I asked myself, what products do the Pros use? They have links to the Manufacturers and Brands that they use, sell and rent. This brings me to Subs particularly EV and EAW. They seem to use those two a lot. A few years ago there was a band that used to play in a Club where I do SR. I recall the band using a EAW Sub. That thing rocked. I cannot remember the Model but it was huge and looked like a Mini Stage, lol. It might be one of those in the SB series. http://www.eaw.com/products/SBSeries/ & http://www.eaw.com/products/speakers/subs/index.html

Now I know that some would say these are Concert/Touring Speakers, for those who only do small Weddings they may not apply. However, if one is doing Gym, large venue projects or planning on doing so, it might be interesting research to do. Same thing with the Bosch/EV Touring Series. There are products in those two lines that DJs can also use.

These products are pretty pricey but they sure don't compromise quality in sound. The more wannabees get into the market the more one should strive to stay ahead of the pack by being different. If you were to set up in a room with 5 other DJs, each with equipment they would normally bring along for a room of that size, and all were to sound alike then there is no real advantage one would have over the other.

Being from the Caribbean (Even here in Texas), in my early DJ years, we used to have Island parties where there were sometimes 3 DJs providing the music. It turned out to be very competitive in Sound and skills where each DJ sought to outdo each other. There was a Sound Company in Boston who gave me a piece of advice when I first started, they said four words that still resounds with me even today. "Be Powerful & Sound Natural". It help me to separate myself from the pack.

This is why I do not worry about "Going DJ Prices", "this is all we pay" etc. I wish I was younger and now entering the DJ business. There are so much products and ideas out there that can help to a DJ to make serious money.

Anyway, I digressed, sorry! Has anyone had real world experience with the EAWs? For comparison sake, what Model EAW Sub would you put up against lets say a JBL SRX 728 and smoke it? It has to be the same class lol. I know that this will smoke a SRX 728 http://www.eaw.com/products/SB2001.html The Bent Series are also very interesting. http://www.eaw.com/products/LA400.html & http://www.eaw.com/products/DCS2.html

I did not go into detail about the EVs that LD Systems use but here is a link. www.electrovoice.com (Touring Series)

What? The pros aren't using scoops?

The 18" direct firing one was decent, somewhere between the MRX and SRX in performance. The bandpass double 15 wasn't so hot if I recall. It was peaky, sort of like the QSC KSub. It'll work for a small setup, but when run loud didn't sound so good.

The subs I'm looking at are 1X18. I believe the cabs are 4-ohm, which would let me hang them off both channels of my 2nd amp, doubling my bottom-end wattage. The cabinet volume look like it's bigger than the Peaveys I'm using now, so I'd think that I should get less compression and better thump. Just guessing at this point but appreciate your (and others) comments in regards.

If they're they 418S (unpowered), I'd have no hesitation on picking up a set in good condition. The SRX718S are on sale now for $800 or less a piece, so factor that into pricing.

They're asking $469 each and yes, that's the model. Man, I don't need to spend money now but those are sorely tempting me.

Canute as you know I spent to be in it and win it when I bought the Dynacords and event after event it sings loud and proud. Deep tonal Bump that has satisfied Island peeps gigs as well as schools on a regular basis. YOur thoughts were the exact reason I bought what I did. It is different and people notice.

If I may ask .... since Oz cannot be real dj because he utilizes auto-mix; is RR and others who use inferior gear also less of a DJ?

I used a Mix2 and Mackies prior to my Denon Dynacotd system. Im not saying that anyone isnt what they are. Striving to improve is a good thing in all avenues.

Canute, You would want SB850's Or Even better the SB 1000Z. Big boy subs that require big boy power. A local company that uses the 1000z's told me that 2000 watts into a 1000z will not even move the surround! its that stiff.

They power theres with Macro Techs and I-Techs fed off of a distro. Box for box, they will eat a SRX 728 for sure

Big boy gear requires big boy transport and bigger boy backs. While it makes sense if you're going to do a lot of gyms, large halls, etc., it probably makes more sense to rent (and have transported) if you only need them occasionally. Tuck's equipment makes a little more sense .. pro level but moveable. If you want to get into rentals and larger live sound, then the SRXs, KV2, EAW, etc. make sense.

I've started my quest BACK to great sound just recently.

I'm going all KV2 EX this time around.

Matter of fact, I just picked up a pair of EX10's & a pair of EX12's.

I already had an EX2.2 sub to go with the pair of EX10's.

Thinking of getting a pair of EX1.8 subs to go with the EX12.

I celebrated my 30 year anniversary DJing this month.

Over the years I've had tons of passive (e.g. unpowered) rigs. Started off with EV 1502, then went Bose 802/302 route, EAW, Cerwin Vega, and finally switched to all JBL SRX.

I started out with QSC, Carver & Adcom amps, but then went to all Crown (K2 & Marcotech were my favorite).

Since I've switched to all powered I've tried Mackie SRM450 (over a Yorkville LS700P), then tried a pair of Bose L1 with (4) B1's, also picked up a pair of EV ZXA5's,
and finally a full EV Live X setup (a pair of ELX112P over a pair of ELX118P).

To ahoustondj's point, there are tons of 1000W powered speakers out there. Most sound decent. But not spectacular.

So to distinguish myself from most of the other DJs in my area,
I'm making the big investment in upgrading all my speakers to KV2.

IMO, worth every penny.

I am (inferior). I couldn't get a gig if my life depended on it.

(btw, cracked 90 last week)

The 18" direct firing MPro actually uses the SAME driver as the SRX in a smaller cabinet. It just won't reach quite as low. These are the ones to watch for if you want to choose from the Mpro line. I <had> and wish I never sold, pair of the 418S MPro subs 18" and the 415 15" two way tops. These sound better than you may think, in a compact package. The MPro 215 15" 2 way that is carpeted isn't in the same league. Should have NEVER sold 'em, however I moved to a pair of SRX 715 2 way tops, that I can't say enough good about, if you power them right.
