First off- I do not use iTunes for my performances. I use it to manage audio for MY PERSONAL iPOD. So heres my issue: I want to keep all of my iTunes music on a portable hard drive and connect it to use/sync with iTunes. I've gone in under Preferences then Advanced and changed the folder to iTunes Music on my F: Hard Drive.

Unfortunately, whenever i add something to iTunes library it puts it on my computer!!!!! I have to take the file to the hard drive and thats annoying because then the track doesn't work in iTunes and i have to manually assign the track to its file and frankly i don't want to go in and do that for all the music i added last night! How can i transfer these tracks off my computer to the hard drive where iTunes is supposed to be reading from anyway without having to manually assign 1000 tracks to their files? and 2nd how do i keep music from being put on my HD and keep it solely on the external?

I use it all the time and I have found some great songs there without having to go out to the stores. Many songs I don't have and the bride requests I will go to ITunes to purchase.

The problem with iTunes is that first, its expensive, and second, the majoiry of songs are encoded in 128kbps protected ACC. The quality isn't amazing, and you have to reburn the files to get them as MP3.

I use iTunes as a backup, if I'm either at a gig, or right before a gig realize that I need a few songs, I'll usually hit up iTunes, because it is very handy, I just wish they would convert all their music to the new DRM free iTunes Plus format boasting 225kbps.

Many of their songs come in a right-protected, higher def. file version. Still not good old MP3 but better than standard download. The difference isn't really noticeable to my ear.

I meant i don't play from iTunes at shows. I do purchase tracks from them.

I will put it up with any MP3 out there. I have been using it forever with no problems and many DJs I know that work in clubs, use it also. To each is own, I have many ITunes songs and the quality is good! If there is a song that lacks sound, I will run it through Audition and EQ it and you will not know the difference.

I don't think .99 cents is expensive compared to other downloading sites out. :sqlaugh:

As a matter of fact, this topic was discussed in other forums, we did a MP3 test to see how many DJs can tell the difference and many failed, including me. We had a file of 128 that we ran through Audition and EQ'd it and had one at 256 and not many guessed which one was 128 out of 4 files.

You can have a 128 and run it through a program and EQ it and not many will tell the difference.

I use I tunes regularily.....99 cents is too expensive; beats 10 years ago when you had to buy a whole cd (20 bucks) for one song....Oh you younguns' !!!

I use Soundtaxi to convert to an MP3.....Quality has never been an issue to me or my clients....

You probably got your answer already but those two problems are related. First, you must go to iTunes preferences and select the "Advance" tab.
You will see a first choice where you can select the location of your Music folder. The folder doesn't have to be on your computer.

Optionally, you can also deselect the first check box that says "Keep iTunes Music folder organized". That would let you keep your files organized in your personal way (that is, if you don't like the "Artist/Album/Tracks" default organization in your Music folder).

Eventually, when you start iTunes, you can press "Shift" while starting the software to select your Music database if you want to keep two or more different copies, but that's for another post... ;)

2nd how do i keep music from being put on my HD and keep it solely on the external?

You must deselect the check box "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to my library"

That should do it.

Good luck!
