Let me ask the OP how long have you been a DJ? For those who have been doing this a long time we know every once in a while there will be an event that you do where it's not a dancing crowd. it doesn't mean you did a bad job. that's how things go sometimes.

Now when you have enough experience at doing events, you will know when to play what song or style of music. That can make or break an event.

I remember attending a surprise 50th birthday celebration. My best friends old tenant was giving her husband this party. The DJ was using some great gear. A pair of QSC tops and a mix deck express. He had some great music to play but didn't know what to do with it. The event was for a 50 year old and he should have known there going to be people over 50 at the event. He should have started with stuff to entertain the older guest first and then go from there with different stuff as the event was going on. the event was from 8PM-1AM. 5 hours. He started off with this hip hop stuff and nobody was dancing. By 11:30 most of the crowd was gone. If he knew when to play what he would have rocked that event. He blew it big time because he played the right music at the wrong time.

So such things you learn over time as you keep doing events for clients and their guest. Steve nailed it. different events will require a DJ to play different kinds of music for a client and their guest. All events are not the same. Like I said if you're looking to do an event find out first the styles of music they want before committing to doing the event. So you both are on the same page. Doesn't mean that sometimes at an event what a client wants may not be working. that would mean time to switch things up but first get the clients permission. Don't just take things in your own hands. Might help to discuss this before agreeing to do the event. You want to not have people blame you because the event is going bad with nobody dancing. Sometimes you can't help it. You just have to bite the bullet and move on to your next event hoping that one turns out better.

The OP asked for your top 5 new dance songs that pack a floor.

I understand that. He's asking an open question. What 5 songs that will pack a dance floor for one event might kill another dance floor. It depends on the type of event and the crowd attending the event. If he had asked what 5 songs pack a dance floor for each genre of music a DJ can play would have been a better way to ask that question.

No the question was straight forward. What 5 songs are packing your dancefloor.... not what songs are killing your dancefloor, not what songs are working at one party snd not another. Straight to the point... what 5 songs are packing your dancefloor. Read the original post again and share where he talked about what is not working.

That's all the input he had...New music in his mind is circa 1986

Steve said it best. It depends on the type of event it is. What 5 songs packs a dance floor or your dance floor depends on the type of DJ you are, what you play, what a client and a crowd wants. He doesn't say if the event is a private event public event a bar or a club. If it's a bar on a certain night the bar may want to feature a DJ playing a certain style of music. If it works well they will keep it up so people attending the bar will know what to expect on a certain night.

What if it's an event that the client wants the DJ to play Country music and the DJ they book doesn't play such stuff, that's a train wreck waiting to happen.

Mix... he said what are the top 5 songs working for YOUR dancefloor. He's not asking for a specific type of party.

IMHO, the fact that this question even had to be asked, plus the ridiculous artist pairing on some songs (i.e. Sheldon/Pitbull and Black Eyed Peas/Shakira) shows how low the industry will sink to produce a Music Video they hope will catch on. "Throw Away" music.

Obviously you don't.

No he wasn't. It was straight forward for everyone else here.

and to expand on that .. the top 5 current songs.
What might work for one DJ might not work for another. He can get suggestions from us for the top 5 songs that we play at an event. Again it depends on the type of event it is that the DJ is doing. For example for a certain event the top 5 songs might be one thing. You play the same thing for another event and the dance floor will stay clear through out the event. That's where reading a crowd is very helpful if you know how to do it. Sometimes you may need to change things on the fly to get people on the dance floor. What I might play for one crowd might be totally different for another. That takes experience to know what to do. that includes when you play a song that kills the dance floor. How quickly can you recover the dance floor. For example someone makes a request. You play their request and it kills the dance floor. If you're really good you can recover the dance floor within the next couple of songs. Then sometimes you use your judgement and know if you play their request it will kill the dance floor and kill your flow.

But he wasn’t asking if it will work. He just wanted to see your list of your top 5 CURRENT songs.

I think we all understand this. The guy just wants YOUR 5 CURRENT songs not a long winded explanation of what might or might not kill a dance floor
