I'm so old... I still use a 19" rack-mounted mixer

I posted a thread the other day about the first professional DJ mixer (the Bozak that UREI then improved on). This got me thinking about the 19" rack mount mixer format and how ubiquitous it once was. At one time, it seemed that most mobile DJs used this format. Controllers have now killed that. I did some quick checking today. Gemini, Denon, Rane, Allen & Heath and, Pioneer have all stopped offering mixers in the 19" format. Numark and American DJ offer just one model each in that format. Battle style mixers though are still popular.

I feel old. I use a simple controller but not its internal sound card. I use a 3rd party external sound card that then feeds a 19" mixer. This format provides a lot of built-in redundancy. I see the nice custom booths with the large controller/mixer built flush into the surface and while I love the look, I question the lack of redundancy. However, now I question the image projected by still using a 19" rack. Does this make me look older than my youthful receding hairline, wrinkles, pot belly, and bags under the eyes?

If I was still in this biz, I'd really prefer a 19" mixer. That's all I ever used. The Rane MOJO was my favorite!

Old school mixer here too. For what I do a controller would just be a toy

I still use a Pioneer 5000 and Denon D4500Mk2 (CD player). The Denon has two USB inputs as well as the double CD players. I'm good incase the Laptop decides to bite the dust during event by simply adding either a thumb drive or external HD to the Denon.

Not me. I did a 80s party at a yacht club last Saturday. Using just 1 pro16.
One of the important members calls me the night before and wants to let his son and his 2 friends sing a few songs from their band. Used my hand sized t4 mixer for 3 mics C88A4DFA-D730-42D0-9E98-3870C24D7393.jpegB028A59C-DEE2-4504-B3E5-4971B38E78FC.jpegDA076C0E-D0B2-48B2-914C-80CA151AB1FA.jpeg15EE8FD5-38FE-49D4-AAE9-CCEA479C873D.jpeg2FDE8D4F-D488-406E-BBF4-C013CD5FB877.jpeg

October 25, 2014 was the last time I used one. I documented it for myself :djsmug:

Aaaahhh...I had that Denon mixer as well. Loved it! I bought it after my Rane was damaged during a sudden storm during an outside reception. Lost my main laptop that day as well...:sqmad: Thankfully, I had a backup laptop and ran a wire from the headphone jack to the audio inputs on one speaker. Used the other speaker for the mic.

Hmmmm, I wonder.....Does using my Denon MC600MK2 (with rackmount kit) qualify as rackmount mixer?

Not really, but that is the controller that everyone who still likes the rackmount format seems to gravitate toward.

I have one 19inch rack case left, its a 2U slant top, I keep meaning to try and sell it, I like it simply because it puts the laptop at the perfect height, but damn its so bulky and heavy to move around, probably why iv never actually used it.
