To the old timers here, knowing what you know today about the private events space (specifically weddings), if you were to start all over again, what would you do differently in terms of marketing to fill up your calender and get consistant bookings?

I would do it again in this day and age.
Everything would need to be social media focused, I really feel for that format the more content you post the better your results will be, i believe to effective you would spend more time marketing than actually prepping and performing. Marketing would be your full time job and DJing would feel like a part time gig time and effort wise

I have to agree with you on that... I am guilty of it myself, the majority of time should be focused on marketing (social media) and sales, yet us DJs are itching for that gear talk, the sync button discussion, and complain about taking requests 😡 this is a business at the end of the day and should be treated as one... Thanks for the input

I think most of us are guilty of this to some degree. It is easier to think some gear is going to solve an issue. Marketing is much harder.

That and new gear is fun😁

One thing I would change would be switch to powered speakers sooner. I probably would go back and buy into QSC K series instead of waiting a while for powered speakers to come down in price for something that sounded good to me. I didn't like the JBL EONs sound quality at the time, didn't know much about Mackie, and I don't remember many other brands pushing powered speakers yet. 2008 to 2012 I felt most powered speakers were still inferior. I held onto the passive amps/speakers 2-3 years longer than I probably should have. I bought my first powered speaker in 2013. Didn't go all in until some time in 2014.

I wouldn't change how I marketed because I look back and did the things I did because that is who I am simply put. BUT, if I could go back in time and do all the video marketing sooner, and jumped onto social media early, maybe I would go all in on it. Of course that could change the fabric of time all together LOL

Honestly for me I would have taken it more seriously and not something I did for fun.

Starting when I did I would have spent money on Yellow Pages sooner

Starting now I would hammer social media. I primarily use Facebook and not as well as I should and it's been very very good to me

I didn't and I still wouldn't make active speakers the center of inventory.

They are well suited to live performances and DJs because the setups are usually compact, and the application is music for dancing.

But powerful active speakers require electricity, whereas passive speakers can be arrayed more easily in unique locations where we may not have or want to run power. When the number of speakers or their locations increase - central management of the array may make more sense.

For example, I typically use powered speakers for an indoor reception.

For outdoor ceremonies I choose passive speakers because I can more easily hide both mains and delays in the surrounding landscape and feed them with a single NL4 daisy chain. I can leave passive speakers in the rain without much worry. If I might have to strike in the rain - I'm happy not to be using active speakers.

Interesting approach for ceremony 🤔

I would mimic Taso. The way he has crafted his image and the video clips that he's posted are a model for us all.
Can't say that without also addressing the obvious 2nd question:

"Would you be willing to relocate in order to do that?"
