I think this will be my last year me doing this event.

Earlier I get a phone call about doing this yearly memorial that takes place in Branch Brook Park. I told the guy we would do it again this year. We did it last year. 2 years ago we didn't do it because he was being cheap. All we wanted was an extra $50 to do the event and he wouldn't pay that. This is after us doing this I think 2 years in a row. So he wouldn't have us there 2 years in a row or maybe 3 years if he didn't like the job we did.

He's just plain cheap. I get that it's a memorial for his son that died 2 weeks after his 12th birthday from a form of Cancer. So we give this guy a great break on the price. The year he decided to cut us out he got a disaster. I don't know who did it but it was very ugly! Now he wants to know what we would charge to do it the following year. N ow we raised the price by $100. Which is still a great deal for him. For me it's about the exposure and gas money.

Now this guy does his yearly thing of crying about how he's hurting for money to do this event. He doesn't know I know where the money comes from to do this event. He's on the board that puts on the African American Heritage Festival every year in Wheequaic Park every year on the weekend of Memorial and Labor day weekends. So he's not there not getting paid something to put this event on. The city of Newark has a seperate fund that goes for him to put this event on. He doesn't know that I know all of this and I won't say a thing because it's none of my business. My thing is just pay us.

Please be kind when I tell this part. My partner tells me he called him telling him this year he's got someone suppling the sound equipment for free. He still wants ut to come and play. The money is still the same. No issues with that anyway because if the signed agreement wer to change to a lower price that would void the contract and we would be done with doing this event. Our issue and concern is we don't know this person or person's providing the sound. My partner is to find out what they will be bringing. We don't like this because we don't know what this person will be bringing and we certainly don't want us looking bad because of this. What we bring to do the job with is great and it gets the job done very well. Now we do have a limit on what we bring because of the price he wants to pay. We could and would bring more if he was willing to pay more. We know he won't do that. So he gets what we decide to give him for the amount he wants to pay. We'll see how it goes.

I just know what he got 2 years ago was a hot mess. I won't go into what happened. Just know that what he paid them was not even worth half the price. He doesn't call me because he knows I would have some serious questions for him. I wouldn't just accept what he says and just do the job. Now I know why this other person is doing this for free. They want to get in good with him so they can be added on for the tax exempt status that he gets for doing these events. My feeling is eventually he will be cutting us out from doing this event in the future so he can get a DJ to volunteer to do this. If that happens he can keep that gig and we wish him well. Our concern is if he will be getting someone to do the sound that will be the same as the ones he got 2 years ago. Like I said it was very ugly and he was highly upset at the end. He only has himself to blame for being so cheap and petty.

For me it's about the exposure and gas money.
If this is true, then the money doesn't matter - which means there should not have been a disagreement over $50, much less $100.

It also means that this statement is 100% false.
My thing is just pay us.
So which is it ... is it for 'exposure and gas money' .. or is it 'just pay us'?

For this specific person, you've raised his price now $100 since his last event - how many events are you consistently booking that led to the decision to increase the price for just him? You don't raise prices for the heck of it. You raise prices because there is demand.

If he is going to pay you the same whether or not you bring your sound gear, then just play and enjoy a simple gig.

I don't think you will be giving up too many potential clients with the "exposure" anyway.

This is about setting a minimum that we are to be paid to do the event. Especially with what we were supplying him to do the event. The 2 Yorkville 801p subs, 2 Yamaha DSR 15's and I think the 2 Yamaha C215 speakers in the park all day till 7:30 which is when the event is over. Now us bringing that stuff to the park is worth way more than what he spends. We just work with him because it's a memorial for his son and a community event as well.

So here in lies the issue with having a "partner" who isnt on the same page.... if you are the gatekeeper for your company ...and people respond by going behind your back to your partner who lives by some different code... your company has no foundation. and changes with the tide.

Considering you said:

then 'a minimum' is $40.

Why did this guy's price raise $100 - meanwhile you've given everyone else a break, done it for free or paid for it?

Then this is less 'work' for you.

This is not true at all - all specifics can be changed at any time as long as both parties agree to it in writing.

Our issue and concern is we don't know this person or person's providing the sound. My partner is to find out what they will be bringing.
What does this matter - he's not hiring you to bring anything other than your music.

We don't like this because we don't know what this person will be bringing and we certainly don't want us looking bad because of this.

If it's for 'exposure and gas money', then why is there a limit on anything?

Why are you so 'limited' with this person, yet you go overboard on every other event? You have brought much more to much less paying customers.

This goes hand in hand with my statement about the companys shaky foundation

cc
NO SHAKEY FOUNDATION HERE. He just tries to see how he can cut corners with anybody he thinks he can get away with it. He tried to get away with not paying Kenny Bobien all his money to perform. He told him either he pay him all his money or he wasn't going to perform and he was on the postcards saying he was going to be there to perform. Like I said we're at the bare minimum for doing this event. If he wants someone to do it for less than the price we do it for than he can have at it. He just needs to remember what happened the last time he did that and what he got.

As I said right now we don't know who this person is that he has doing this for free. I know what we have and what it can do including it's limitations. I don't want what this person is bringing make us look bad. I don't know if this person for example will be bringing in a cheap garbage controller to use or anything else for that matter. Besides that I don't like using other people's stuff unless we know each other personally. That way I know what they will bring will be top notch gear and they know I know what I'm doing with it. What we have to offer we know is tight to the right!

Mix, you make these things FAARRRRRR more complicated than they need to be.

Bring your own controller and plug into the "system" .. save your back and time. And I'm sure their gear won't be what makes you look bad.

Mix...you didnt really openly admit to doing this for "exposure" did u?

The only people who believe that an event like this is beneficial exposure are the people bartering with that notion of exposure... as if it had any monetary value...

its the "magic beans" of our era
