I have watched a number of the DIY DJ Facade videos on Youtube in the past. Today I was bored, and also was feeling a bit crafty. So I decided to make a DIY DJ Facade. I figure I would give the Facade I make to my son to use, BUT if I wanted to, I could certainly use it myself if it looked good enough...

I ended up making a trip out to IKEA. I have not been to that store in like 9 years, so all the more reason to refamiliarize myself with IKEA. ....It's a cool shopping experience. I noticed a lot of people hanging out in there spending their afternoon at IKEA. They have a Restaurant/Cafe where they sell Sweedish meatballs since they are a Swiss owned company lol. ...Cool concept!

Anyway, this is what I purchased in order to make this facade:

FISSKO $3.99 16x20 inch Picture Frames. I bought 5 frames
LED 4 seperate string Light for $24.99 (I just wanted to see how this looks behind a facade compared to a bar light)

Went to Home Depot and purchased:
5 sheets of M320 Sand Paper about $5

Also used Black Gaffers Tape

Assuming you already have Gaffers Tape, or Black Duck Tape laying around, you could make this facade for about $26 after taxes if you don't buy the strip lights.

It took me about 5 to 6 minutes per frame to unwrap, take backing out, peel film off the clear plastic, and sand down both sides of the plastic. Frames took about 30 minutes. Then I spent like 5 minutes taping it all together...if that.

Here is the end result: ...My son think's it's pretty cool. The whole thing weighs maybe 2.5 lbs. With the 3 front panels fully extended it should be just under 60 inches long and fill a 5 foot table perfectly. I only had a 4 foot table to show it on.

Just fold in one of the panels and it fit's a 4 foot table

That is how it looks with a ADJ Bar Light behind it

And this is how it looks with the $25 4 strip LED lights I got at IKEA

The way I have it taped, it folds up to 2 panels long. So a bag for this would need to be a typical facade bag, or a long Duffle Bag like a 42 inch long one. ...Or just throw a trash bag over it LOL.

Nice job ...

IKEA serves Swedish meatballs .. because they are a company from SWEDEN .. not Switzerland ... I suppose if they were known for Swiss cheese maybe .. :)

To me all those countries are the same. ...Finland, Sweden, Switzerland, DenMark. ....
I've been to Switzerland ... not quite in the same neighborhood as Sweden ... about a 900 mile drive away.

Did you open up a bank account there just in case? Did you bother buying one of their watches?

...Is the Swiss Cheese any better there? ...Can't go wrong witheating Swiss Chocolate while there just for the noteriety of doing so! :)

SO I have to admit that Light Refraction through this home made facade is BETTER than a facade that uses LYCRA.

My Grundorf Facade with White Lycra in front looks nice with no lights behind it. However, light does not refract or disperse through out the whole front very well. Light shines through more like a beam so to speak. It doesn't spread through out as well.

My Plexi Glass one disperses light through out it nicely, BUT it has about a 35% light transmission since it's frosted plexi glass so it doesn't brighten up the area in front of it as well, as Lycra, or this home made one would, but that facade itself looks great with light all around inside of it.

Very well done..

I hadn't been in an Ikea in about 20 years and when the one in Halifax opened I went in opening weekend. I don't have anxiety problems but I did that day man those places are weirdly designed and it was packed

I've made this same Facade. I found the instructions on Youtube. It worked well for the first couple of events, but eventually the plastic cracked and I stopped using it. I still have the frames hinged together but haven't had the desire to replace the plastic. Actually I haven't had the desire to go back to IKEA. I hate the way those stores are laid out and when it's crowded I just can't stand to be in there.
