Okay so I totally get that. I hate asking too, which is why I have a garage full of gear, 90% of it which never gets used.
People do ask me if THEY can borrow or rent things from me. I only let things go out to people I trust, but the answer is always yes, come get it. Usually there's no charge. Some examples: a Photobooth printer. A specific backdrop that a bride wants for her wedding. A speaker. A case of uplights. The dry ice fogger for dancing on the clouds. When your buddy Bob Carpenter needed a pair of speakers to get him through December because he had sold off his old ones and his new ones were still backordered, my extra pair of Evox 8s were his for the month.
Only when people start to need the same piece of gear multiple times do I suggest that they go buy one of their own, or just buy mine. With the photobooth backdrops, me and few other people have a little pool going... it saves us money because we aren't all purchasing the same designs. We just borrow the designs we need when we need them. For the other things, I'd rather have them going out and helping my friends make some money.
My point is that if you only have a few gigs lined up, it's perfectly fine to ask a friend to borrow some gear. I started DJing in 1986 at church dances using a PA system that my middle school librarian let me take home on the weekends, the only condition being that I had it back in the storage closet on Monday morning like it had never left the building - it was our little arrangement. At the first wedding I did, a very low-key backyard event in 1990, I didn't even own a sound system, but I knew some established DJs who could help me out. Because of their generosity, I decided to pay it forward when possible.
We're all friends in this business, really. Your friend has probably borrowed a piece of gear or two from other people at some point. There's never any harm in asking, and the worst thing your friend can do is say no.
