I hope I can do the event tomorrow.

Its funny that the song you always quote as the song thats mainstream and you are tired of playing is a song that ive played maybe twice in my entire 30 year career. This is what people are trying to explain to you...you are so far deep into one single niche that the songs you think are these mainstream overplayed borefests are obscure to the populous... our clients havent had our musical experience... they werent 30 years old at club "zanzibar" and get all sentimental over old house and disco...

You were almost booked for a young childs birthday party... were you really expecting that child and his/her family to go on a trip with you back to club zanzibar?

Genres have their place... and if another old man or woman want you to take them back to the old days of house and disco for a particular occasion... then sure...have at it... but dont believe for one second that you can run a mainstream dj service without stepping out of your comfort bubble and actually putting in the work to become a supplier of popular music...

Do u really think the rest of us dont have our own favorite sentimentally driven genres... i personally had my hay day in the clubs in the 90s and early 2000's and there are so many obscure songs that only existed in that moment...but no longer resinate with a crowd in 2019... sure some songs made it through...and its fun to drop a couple interesting tracks to see how they play... but it is highly unfair to hire out services and have a client expecting a musically educated dj...and instead they get you

its like sitting down to watch the stooges and getting a Shemp

Sorry you feel that way and don't understand. There are certain songs that are classics from different genres. There are just certain songs I'm sick and tired of playing. I will play them because it makes the crowd happy. A lot of the new songs as you put it are a stupid piece of s***. Yet if I'm dealing with a safe crowd in a safe place for a safe event it gets played. Provided it's appropriate for the event.

Then there are some songs I will never get tired of. I got a song in mind that I have to find on YouTube because I don't remember the name of the song but it's through the roof for me. I think the artist is Joe Buttons.

Theres a whole lot of music in the grey area between old house music and music that is "unsafe" or "stupid S***"

Here is a way to start... have you gone down the Mobile Beat 200 list and made sure you have them... i believe that a dj can play 98 percent of all parties with this list (in a pinch) obviously for a teen party it wouldnt be ideal...but could actually get ya thru...

so make that your base... then begin to surround it with all the sub genres... and before you know it...you have a vast library that can do any party you could ever imagine...

at this very moment i could do a 20's party.... a 50's party....a 90's party...a beach party... etc...without even needing to research. it makes it easy to sleep at night

The artist is Fat Man Scoop Put Your Hands Up.

Fatman scoop...crooklyn clan...dj Kool...etc... is definitely timeless... and there is a buttload of that GoGo style stuff out there... hours and hours... but it is purely garnish for the main dish of a good balanced dj set.... sprinkle it in perfectly from time to time and its a winner....do it all night and people will quickly tire of it.

This is a certain style of music that certain crowds enjoy. Those crowds are more open. They are not stuck on the same old stuff you hear time and time again. That stuff that is boring to me but everybody wants to hear. What we call standard stuff. My thing is disco music, house music and oldies but goodies. Stuff that is safe. Crowds not looking for trouble.
You're right, this is a certain style of music that certain crowds enjoy. Have you found those crowds that want this and are willing to pay enough for you to make a living doing it? If the answer is no, then you need to come up with a different idea. Fwiw, even these 'crowds' have problem children - there is not one genre that is known as 'safe music'.

I agree with you totally but to be quite fair at this time anyone hiring Mix should know exactly what they are getting. I can't imagine they would expect anything more or less

I don't think there's a song I play that I am not tired of but I'm not paid to listen to music I'm paid to entertain. Around here Old Time Rock and Roll and the Mull River Shuffle (local music) are played at almost every event regardless of age. I've literally heard these songs hundreds if not thousands of times. They make people dance and keep them happy I like that so I've learned to like playing them

I Did a 13th Birthday party back in March they gave me a list of some I knew and some I didn't know. I did a couple of hours research and then I knew them all and where they would fit and with what they would fit with. If you're not prepared to research new music it's time to find a club that specializes in deep classic house or hang em up

That's where you're totally wrong. I personally know certain styles of music that are safe. My friend just did an oldies but goodies dance and the people there had a great time. Nobody wanting to argue or start a fight. He does this scholarship dance every year and not one argument or fight after 13 years. So certain styles of music brings in a certain crowd around here. A bar or club that will allow a DJ to play today's hip hop and R & B all night long usually don't last but so long. It might be different in other areas but that's usually what happens around here.

I'm not totally against today's music. I just feel a lot of the artist making this music have no real talent. I have people who don't believe I don't like Many J Blige. I'm proud that she stopped using drugs. I just never saw that she has any talent to me. J wouldn't go see her perform even if it was free. Now somebody wanting me to play a song of hers at an event is totally different. If I have it I will play it. Also remember not every style of music or every song is right for all events.

Mix, you're either inexperienced, naive, totally blind to the world, ignorant or some combination of those - EVERY kind of music has fans that are more than capable of doing 'bad' things.

This is the problem. There is much more going in the world than 'what happens around here'. If you want things to change, then you need to get away from 'around here'. Taso consistently plays to young adults with todays music (to include Hip Hop and R&B) - and we have yet to hear of one issue - and he's less than an hour away from you.

I think "Around here" is the problem

If you think a fight happening is big trouble you might want to stay inside and not look out the window

Apparently he's never been to a good metal show LOL. Country festivals can get pretty rough too

Mary J Blige hasn't been very relevant for almost 15 years, so I wouldn't lump her into "today's music". And I would totally go see her .. saw Brian McKnight a couple months ago.

Glad you mentioned Taso in this post. I mentioned a bar or club and not a private event. He works in high end venues where clients spend good money to have their event there. Also I'm sure Taso plays more than just today's music at events he does. One song he's played at events he's done is Earth Wind And Fire's September.

We do events outside of the area we live in. We're just careful where the event is to take place, who it's for and the type of event it is. We stopped doing events for just anybody because they needed a DJ to do an event for them.

If you would spend the time marketing and learning as you do profiling clients you and your 23 partners and all their girlfriends would be booked every weekend. Poor Taso wouldn't stand a chance ;)

Taso can work any event, public or private - and I'm sure he'd see the same results.

I’m actually less than 20 min from him lol (no traffic... which never happens). I’m done even responding to this. There’s so much diversity that every music genre has its good and bad in every location. Mix before I did private events, I did a lot of clubs and bars, where I played across all genres. In the clubs it was more top40 remixes and progressive house. Fights broke out there just as much as the hip hop nights did. Nothing serious but you know somebody bumped somebody who didn’t appreciate it. Nothin because of the music. By the way when I say just as much... I mean maybe once a month... and not brawls... just two guys or girls pushin.

You two should hang out more...Maybe you'll luck out and become a partner ;)

Right now we have 2 events so far this summer. July 6th and the last Saturday in August. I certainly want to be more busy than that.

This is great, an event on July 6, just a few days from now.

I suggest you accommodate this event with YOUR sound system, YOUR music, YOUR mixer, 100% all on your own. No partners, no girlfriend, no sisters brothers long lost friend. etc. Completely solo, and let us know how it went.

Without the added baggage you bring along to your gigs, I'm certain it will go so much better than you have been experiencing.
