I bought another Toshiba portable 2 TB HD from Micro Center yesterday for $70.24 exactly. The reason I bought it is because one I had it completely stopped working and one of the 2 HDs I was using had issues the connection. So you have to keep messing with the USB wire to get it to work to read on my laptop. The HD just got finished copying. So now I have another backup HD. Iknow we might be in a tough time right now with getting gigs but I have faith that we're coming back to be stronger then ever.
 
It does seem you don't really take care of your gear. Remove cables and correctly wind .. place fragile gear in padded carriers .. etc. You've had lot's of stuff go that you've listed.

USB connectors wear out over time, and the connection can get shaky. Try using one of the less convenient USB ports on your machine (around the backside, for example.) Chances are the port you use repeatedly (or the cable connector) is getting worn and your drive is actually perfectly fine.
