I got a email about what happened at Club Marlos on Friday May 10th.

The last fight I got in the middle was a cake fight. No harm done, just a little icing on speaker pole

I'd probably be more worried about this. Getting cake gunk in my computer? Boo!!

For Mix: I don't Dj at bars anymore unless it's a private party. But as Jeff said, fights can happen anywhere.

Glad to hear your godson is safe.

With the real rough stuff, The unfortunate reality is this kind of stuff happens. In Cleveland here, as many places, it's confined to the "hood". To me, the real saddest part there is the honest, hard working people that live in those areas because they can't afford anything else. I cannot even imagine what that must be like, living among thugs.

But as numerous people have mentioned, it's just not something most of us even think about.

It reminds me of the old Sam kennison skit about starving people in Africa. "There's nothing there but sand!!! They should move to where the food is!"

Again, unless you can somehow identify who the 'wrong people' are without being prejudice or offensive, then you will have legal issues to deal with - and these alone will run most places out of business.

This is your opinion. Successful owners do not usually make irrational, not thought out changes.
It's not my opinion. I've seen it happen in plenty of places. Things are going well and the place is making plenty of money. Then the place gets a new manager who decides to make changes. Some make very drastic changes and things slowly turn from good to bad. I can name at least 6 places off the top of my head that were doing and they made drastic changes. Those places have been gone for years or decades.

Places don't tend to get a NEW manager if things REALLY are going well. My guess is it wasn't.

anyhow my point is they make these major changes that turns things around for the bad. The great saying is if it ain't broke don't fix it.

My guess is they make changes because the client base shifts and they're trying to stay afloat. You have a vehicle .. check out some clubs AWAY from greater Newark.

If it's the same place as this .. Union man wounded in shooting outside Irvington bar - (https://www.nj.com/essex/2017/01/union_man_wounded_in_shooting_outside_irvington_ba.html) .. it sounds like the place gets that way often. At least no one was shot.

The same place, same name was the site of a murder in the past...prejudice is not necessarily a bad thing, I'm prejudiced against any barrooms where murders occur.

Wanna bet they spend more money on typical, cheap-ass flyers than they do on legit security?

Things will be fine in the park. What surprises me is how some of you think nothing of a fight breaking out in a place. It's what some of you expect to happen at some time a place is in business. It does happen in some places at times. It's certainly something I'm not use to being around and not a place I would play at.
Well because fights have nothing to do with the venue or area... guns getting brought inside and gangs... different story. The reason I don't think many of us make a big deal of a simple fight is because they happen everywhere. Wether it's a small town local bar, or a local club, or a premiere club where you need to spend $1000 for a table of 6 people, or VIP's spend $40k in a night... a fight or two will always break out, and yes that even happens in house music establishments. Have you visited any of the nightclubs in AC or places in NYC like 230 Fifth, LAVO, TAO, or Marquee where it costs $30+ just to get in? Well fights still happen there too.

In the late 90s I witnessed a murder in a nightclub... one of my deepest regrets because it was an after hours spot that i would go to once every 6 months or so after id played a set... just to have a drink.... The spot had had a great reputation... but the clientele had changed a bit... later found out it was under new ownership... upon further inquirey i found out they had hit a rough patch...3 or 4 weeks of empty seats and in desperation hired a different promoter who filled seats.... quantity over quality... the owner found an out and took it...sold the bar to the promoter for pennies on the dollar.... and it swallowed itself within a couple months... The person murdered was a cat about 45 or 50...reminded me of billy dee williams... id had nice conversations with him... he sometimes worked the door at a jazz club near my residency at the time... he apparently bumped the wrong guy and was too cool to bow to him and apologize... pure silliness... and a scene that relives in my head a couple times a week to this day... it aint pretty like the movies ...

It's not that we "think nothing" of a fight breaking out at a bar/nightclub....
it's that most of us HERE, don't do the bar scene...we concentrate on private events.
Now, if you were spinning at a wedding, and four fights broke out....
YEAH! That is something we would take notice of.
Bar fights are nothing new, especially for your neighborhood.

And you may claim that it's not a place you would play at...
but it certainly sounds like the kind of place you USED TO play at.
You've described the trouble you have encountered on this very website...
so I am wondering why YOU are so surprised, when the rest of us are NOT!

If they hired a new manager and made changes, then my guess is that it was broke - and they were trying to fix it. You have to look at things from their angle, not yours - and this is why these statements are your opinion. People rarely change things when they are successful.

You, as a patron, can bring your business to any facility you want to. A facility cannot legally bar you from entering because you look like or are one of the 'wrong people'.

May I introduce you to:

Dress codes.
Club Rules (typically posted)
Admittance standards (often confused with Club rules and should be posted for review prior to payin the cover charge)

...and the lesser properly utilized:
Membership requirements.
Music programming.
Target Market 7 Demographics.
Promotions.
Management plan.
Security presentation and application.

You can introduce me to them - but if any of them affect my legal rights, then you can't do squat with them. Additionally, the first time you 'miss' enforcing one of them, game on. Each and every one of those may also affect how much traffic you get - which affects income and profit. Typically, venues like this also have a higher cover at the door. People (including dj's) want to be paid. No draw, no pay.

In Mix's world, he thinks these 'limited audience' bars are loaded with bucks / and customers. He also thinks they should have little or no cover charge and the drinks should be cheap.

your heart is in the right place Tig...but as Rocky stated... its a carefully crafted house of mirrors when you work the door at a nightclub... thats why he's the best paid guy on the security team... you need a smart guy...and a couple neanderthalls behind him who will take a bullet for him...and youve got yourself a magical situation. i did door work on my off nights for around 7 years... scary as hell at times... but a fun adventure

i did get sucker punched once....i looked like Rocky from "Mask" for about 3 days after...lol

Also had this one guy who would spit on me and run... a real mental case...

I totally get it (and agree) - but again, unless you can identify the 'wrong people' in a non discriminatory way, then you are headed for legal issues. You cannot keep anyone you label as 'tackheads' out of your bar. As a customer, I can go wherever I want. As a vendor, you cannot .. not serve me.

It sucks, but dem's de rulez.

Private places are not required to prostrate themselve at the altar of the demands of the public.

You sound posed and ready to sue private individuals to enforce your personal expectations.

Bars and most clubs are generally not considered private places.

I wasn't checking the place out. I just saw this on Facebook.

I've been hesitant about playing in a place since the last place I played in Ashati's Tavern which is completely gone. Nobody has that space now. That place was a hot mess the way it was being managed.

Law suit my azz. What would you rather have a lawsuit or your place being closed down for good.? Who told you that you can't be selective? It's your place to run how you see fit to keep the doors open.
