I got a call yesterday from the client for the event on 8-31-19 in the park.

I got a call yesterday from the guy who is having the yearly event in Branch Brook Park in Newark, NJ on August 31. Him and his wife have this event every year on the last Saturday in August. So he calls to see if we were still doing the event this year. I told him yes but I had a question about supplying the equipment to do the event in the park. My understanding was that he was supposed to have someone supply the equipment and we were to just supply minimal stuff to get the event done. My partner was to call this person about the equipment they were suppose to bring. He was sick for a while and forgot to make the call. Now I got told that we're to bring our setup and this person was to bring in some extra equipment to enhance what we're bringing if needed.

Then he talked to my partner. I was just picking him up from the hospital. He tells my partner to forget about this person bringing in extra equipment. So the thing is he was trying to give us a hint that he wants more then what we brought there last year. The problem with that is he wants us to bring more but pay us the same thing he paid us from last year. No way. For us to bring more, he will need to pay us more. He got a great deal last! We brought the 2 Yorkville subs, 2 Yamaha tops, 2 Yamaha dual 15's speakers, 2 Mackie speakers for the people performing, our setups to play with and dual cordless mics. He got all of that for $350. We know it's a community charity event for his son's memorial that died 2 weeks after his 12th birthday from a form of Cancer.

We never told him we needed any help with anything as far as equipment goes. Which we don't need help. We both have been doing this for too many years. I've been back 19 years. So we have the right equipment to get the job done. If he wants more we could bring 2 more dual 15's to add to the setup. That won't happen unless he pays us more money. For us to do that it would cost $500 and there's no way he could get a better deal then that. Now the entire event is 8 1/2 hours long. So we can't be more generous then what we're doing right now. He messed up 2 years ago by being cheap. He got someone to do it for $250 and it was a big mess. He told my partner he could get anybody to do it for $250. He got what he paid for and that is a hot mess.

Now if he wanted the Earthquakes as well, then he would have to agree to pay us $700. Again that's a steal of a deal. So until he gets that in order get more he has to spend more, this is what he gets for the money he wants to pay. Of course there are thos on here who won't agree to us providing the same equipment as less year for that same price and they are right. Just looking to help out since it's a charity event. Bottom line we don't need help with someone supplying us a damn thing! We know what we're doing and got things covered. So just let us do what we do and keep it moving instead of him trying to scheme on how he can save money. When he has done that he has gotten horrible results. With us it will be tight to the right. Nobody complaing including my frien who attended last year event that has been been doing this longer then me. He told me if I offered to do it for him for that price, he would hurry up and pay us.

So for you to bring 4 more speakers doubles the price??
Stop being fixated on gear and quote the gigs, an 8 1/2 hour gig on a prime Saturday is worth far more than what you charge.

In reality you are spending well more than 10 hours of your day for 1/2 of $350 or $125, you might as well do 4 hour bar gig by yourself with far less gear and net more dollars per hour

I hear what you are sayimg. We do him a nice favor because it's a charity event. He's the one actually wanting more sound. He just doesn't want to pay more and we know this. That's not going to happen. I'm a nice guy and I could look at it as a way to impress the people attending the event. Yet there has to be limits as to how nice I'm to be. As far as you saying doubling the price bringing in 4 more speakers, it's not just about that sir. It's about the quality he would be getting for the price and not to mention the quality DJs as well. He tells me I'm his favorite DJ and how much he loves me looking to butter me up. He just says that because of the price we charge him and the job we do. Mainly it's about the price we give him first and then the job we do. So far since we've done this event for him, nobody has complained not one bit.

Bringing in 2 more double 15's would mean using another amp since they are non powered speakers. So we're talking $150 more. I think that's being more then fair if he agreed to do it.

I think you are a gear rental company not a DJ

You have a client with 2 different contact points to the same clusterf*** of a company.... he's calling your partner....then he's calling you....then he's calling your partner again.....neither of you seem to communicate with each other....nor do either of you have any clue how to organize your company....

and YOU HAVE NO FAIL SAFE.... your partner gets sick and suddenly a key component of this booking is lost in the minutia of your clusterf*** company for weeks... and you have no clue whats going on... because he's chosen to contact your partner instead of you.

but somehow you want us to believe this guy is a dirtbag....and that you are being mistreated?

The only thing i disrespect about your "client" is his taste in entertainment companies

A Typical Gig Flowchart:

Inquiry > Quote > Agreement and contract > Show up and perform agreed upon services > Happy Client

A Mix Gig Flowchart:

Mix hired years ago for $300 > Last Year, Lame-ass DJ hired for $250 (but they got what they deserved) > Inquiry with partner > Agreement to do the gig > Mix decides how many old speakers are needed and what the price points should be > Confusion > Public flogging of event host for being cheap > 8 pages of commentary on why this is bad business > Mix shows up and plays the wrong music for the event > Nobody happy.

We do him a nice favor because it's a charity event.
If this was true, the prices of a normal event would be significantly different - and based on your own posts, they're not. In fact, your normal events pay less and you bring more equipment. You really need to walk away from this. You're doing this person a dis-service and people will find out. You're not doing him any favors. You're still trying to find ways to get this specific person to pay you more money - while so many others pay you less.

I don't know why you're hung up on this person, but you need to let it go.

So far since we've done this event for him, nobody has complained not one bit.
In relation, nobody has hired you either - which is also not good. Maybe they have complained - but they haven't complained to you.

Bringing in 2 more double 15's would mean using another amp since they are non powered speakers. So we're talking $150 more. I think that's being more then fair if he agreed to do it.
This sounds like your excuse for collecting more unmatched gear.

Too much drama.

We have people who contact us about making a change and inquire about adding time and/or equipment. We give them a quote, they decide. It's that simple.

It all starts with being crystal clear in the beginning what you will provide and what the client will pay you. If that's not clear because someone forgot to call, then it all breaks down from there.

Trying to remember what I promised someone last year is hard. Trying to know what someone else promised them is impossible. So it goes in the contract and no one has to remember.

Mix, seriously, it's the same thing over and over again. I can see how this could happen to a new DJ once. To see it happen to a DJ that's been doing this for over a year seems impossible. You've been doing this how long now?

So you bring a complete clusterf**k of equipment to a handball court for 10 people but you won't throw in a couple of extra speakers for this poor sap that keeps hiring you?

No he contacted me to ask if we could do the event again this year. I told him yes. Then he later on contacted my partner to tell him he had someone coming there to supply some equipment for the event for free. So our understanding was he was supposed to supply the sound system and we supply the rest. My partner was supposed to contact this person. I got a call yesterday from the guy and that's when I asked him what the deal was with this person providing some equipment? He tells me he wanted us to bring what we brought last year and if needed we could use this persons equipment to enhance what we are using. My partners GF made great sense. If we were to use any of that persons equipment we would have them sign a waiver that we're not responsible for any damage to their equipment. He called back and talked to my partner and told him to forget about contacting this person at all. Just have us do what we do and that's it.

No issues with us communicating with each other. We're on the same page. Like I said he just is trying to get it in our head to bring even more stuff without him having to pay more. Like I said that's not going to happen No way Jose! If he wants more for that price then I would suggest he look elsewhere. It's one thing to be nice, it's another thing when a person takes your kindness for weakness.

You were offended in this thread that he was supplying the gear now you're upset he's not? Which is it Mix?

The issue is this sir. The problem I had was him telling me that he was planning on someone bringing in some extra gear on top of what we are bringing as he put it to enhance what we have if needed. We don't need anybody bringing in anything extra for us to possibly use. We got things covered. Again like I said he's looking to play these games figuring for us to take the bait to bring in even more stuff to do the event with in the future and for the same amount of money. NO WAY! If he wants more he has to pay us more. Get out of your head anybody bringing anything extra besides what we're bringing. He told my partner to forget that idea. So I don't suspect anybody will be showing up with anything extra. If it happens I wouldn't use anything they have anyway. I will stick to what we're using. I don't a thing about this person. So I don't know if their stuff is good enough to use or not in that park. It might be some serious professional gear and then it could be some low budget crap. So rather then take a chance, we'll do what we do and that's it.
