Here is my Mid Night Poll! :)

How much money do you think you will spend on DJ Equipment in 2019? This means strictly DJ Audio Equipment including Lighting. (Not other miscellaneious business expenses)

Every year I spend between 5-10k on equipment. This is large items. I'm at 5.5k for this year. And that was mostly for the sparklers and an item that needed replacing for the photo booth. I've spent about another $1000 on smaller miscellaneous items like gaffer tape, batteries, wires, cases, mic stands, zip ties, etc. Last year my big purchases were investments in snow machines, selfie stations, new dj console, etc.

I’ve only spent about $700 so far this year. That’s not much compared to past years. I think I might spend about $2,000 -$2,500 more... depending. Business is not looking good this year, so anything I spend is gonna put me in the red. I got decisions to make.[emoji1]

So far I have purchased the ADJ BoomBox FX2 for $190. And purchased 2 table top facades (one for my brother). I'm at about $400 for the year.

Outside of maybe a new laptop later this year , I don't see any more equipment purchases occuring. I would like to invest in new up lighting, but unless I book some more lighting jobs this year, I will hold off on that until next year.

That’s one of those chicken-or-egg situations. Do you buy the lights so you can sell the service, or do you sell the service so you can buy the lights?... Me; I offer basic lighting and don’t want MORE cr@p to lug in and set up.[emoji4]

With my current wedding clients I think I have gotten as much as I will on UP Lighting add ons this year. My current lights work fine except for 4 of them. 1 battery powered Puck does not hold much of a charge and some of the LED diodes are dead. Another cheap plug in light has a malfunctioning fan. Another up light has a broken menu screen, and one of the other lights has a menu screen that is sort of malfunctioning. All these lights are 5+ years old except the 2 Rainbow 18 watt x6 lights that I purchased. I want to upgrade to those, but spending $2,000+ on more up lights does not make sense when I know it will take me a long time to earn my money back and start earning profit on those lights.

In the winter I might sell all my older lights on a lot style Ebay auction, and see what I get for the lights. Maybe use the money towards new lights. That might be the only way I pull the trigger on new up lights next year. ...That is also assuming I can get at least a few hundred bucks for all the lights I have now. With their age, and some lights in poor condition, I don't think any one will pay more than 25% of what I paid for them new.

thinking about this more...I will also have to invest in cases, or new bags. The bags I have now all have their zippers breaking or broken. I am carrying open bags around for transporting these lights right now. It just seems that it's just more money to offer the service, and not much return (at least for me).

If I gonna spend $2000 on something, it’s sure not gonna be something that sits around waiting to be used. I’m gonna at least get something that’s fun to play with when it’s not being used for an event. Lights are NOT something I enjoy playing with, so no light purchases for me unless I need to replace something broken.[emoji4]

I'm at maybe $900 currently, but will most likely drop a bit at DJ Expo, so I'm thinking $1500ish.

It's hard to ballpark the rebuild on my ceremony system since I hate the mixer I bought... I'm not sure where I'm going to end up there.

I was also looking at replacing my KW-181 with a heavier duty sub since I only bring that rig out for bigger gigs now. But I'm not sure I need it yet.

I'm looking to get more lights to replace the ones that were stolen. That's about it for now I think. There are things I always want. The question is do I need it? Got to remember bills have to be paid. Right now the breaks on the van need to be fixed and an oil change.

Since I’m in the selling mode, selling everything that has been used in years. I’m in the negative column (more stuff sold than brought) with about another 8k worth of stuff to get rid of. Long gone are the days where I’d be spending up to 16K per year but most of the Equipment isn’t expensive like it used to be now. Only maybe a laptop upgrade is planned for my everyday laptop. I do have plans to upgrade video projectors in a year or so.

May I ask what are you looking to sell?

There's nothing I really need but I might buy another laptop this year. I had been looking at gig bars I'm still flipping the coin on them

no more than $1,000 this year. I am super happy with my setup and don't think any piece of gear would make me more money or make my load in and load out faster. None of my gear is close to needing replacing and that's on purpose as I bought gear that was overkill for most of the event I DJ.

Weren't you talking about purchasing a new pair of powered speakers for quite a while? Did you buy them already, or did you decide that you don't need new speakers any time soon?

No planned spending this year. I am actually get rid of stuff. I may buy some new longer speakon cables as I may repurpose the shorter set for my home stereo.Upgrades to the home stereo are much higher on my list right now than anything DJ related. However, my fiance has hinted at wanting cool lighting for the house. Perhaps there is some DMX controlled LED strips in my future.

I've bought a lot of new gear but, nothing I've bought (or will by) this year is intended for DJing.
At best, I'll renew my pool subscription.
