How much fabric to scrunch?

This might be primarily a question for @djtaso as I'm not sure how many others are running totems. But I wanted to ask in a forum anyway since it might help others.

How much extra fabric do you buy for your truss scrims to get the scrunchy look? I've got a 2 meter truss (6.5 ft), and currently just have the corresponding scrims. Would you go for an 8 footer, or do you need more fabric to make it look right?

To get a true scrunched look you’ll need more than that. Closer to 9/10ft

10' should be plenty

There's math for this. :)

A common ratio is 2:1 for most light fabrics so, for a 2 meter truss you want a 4 meter length of fabric. For a scrim, if every inch is doubled then you can have half-inch high pleats over the entire length.

It works the same way with drape. A 4 foot panel of banjo drape is generally pleated to yield only a 2 foot linear run. Hence, using 4 foot panels for an 80 foot wall of drape requires at least 40 panels (160 Ft of drape.) The numbers change based on fabric used and the size of the possible pleats. The ratio for pleated Velour is lower and that for pleated voile much higher (4:1)
