I just called a lady I decided on taking a chance to talk to to see how it goes with her. I talked to her for a few minutes and she had to go. I told her I retired from my day job and told her I was a DJ. She asked me where do I play at? I told her I used to play in a place but don't anymore.

When you tell someone you're a DJ how many of you get asked the question where do you play at? I get that question asked of me often.

I always tell them that I play at the Handball Court in my local park for crowds of less then ten. Then I tell them that I bring 50 mismatched speakers to those events. That always has quite the way of impressing the ladies.

I usually say if you can name a hall on the island I haven't played in I'll give you a discount ;)

I just say all the major venues

If you’re known for working in a nightlife environment, you’ll get asked that... if you’re known for playing private events, you’ll get asked what kind of events do you usually do. I haven’t been asked where I play in over 5 years since I don’t do nightlife anymore.

Actually I tell people I manage a entertainment company, not that I am DJ. I’ve never work in a club except for a private parties a couple of times. Hated it and that was before the smoking restrictions, it smelled like a ash tray. I do have lists locations, clients & yes a resume. If they want to see me action, there are videos. I don’t allow potential clients into my events. I did have one couple show up unexpectedly while I was doing a fraternity semi-formal. Well, they got a eye full, the dance floor was packed with hyped up, drunk people losing their mind to rap music. Not what you want at your wedding. Lol, usually this get banded at each location.

Ok that couple showed up to a private event you were doing. How did they know you were doing that event and did they book you for their wedding?

I like to take advantage of that question by painting an enormous mural with just a few brush strokes.

"Where do I DJ? Great question and I'm glad you asked. " I am a full-time DJ and I musically host hundreds of various types and styles of private events year-round here in the great Northeast. From 40 to 4,000 people, from wedding receptions to college homecomings, I have the experience and the skills. How can I make your event a success?"

There's always a ying and yang to every method.

For example, listing facilities where you work may first migrate that client to those pages where they'll find a recommended vendor list too. Uh oh if you're not on it. Uh oh if most are lesser priced than you. Uh oh if their initial marketing presentation kicks your butt.

Inviting a client to audition you at a private event can be dicey. I have them come to the reception and get drinks at the bar. WTF??? They come into the room wearing shorts. WTF??? The music you're playing was your existing customer's request list which just happens to be on the auditioning customer's hate list. After getting burned several times, even though I had permission from the client, the on-site audition is not offered in any form.

Just some random thoughts about the question.

Yes, but 40-4000 sounds more impressive than Mix's 4-40 ... :)

It's not quite the same for me.
I tell them I work in radio...
which starts a whole different conversation.
The old "Face for radio" conversation ?? :)

BLAH BLAH BLAH...
[SARACASM] Just because you are adept and masterful at human interaction, doesn't give you the right to come here and get all "look at me and how capable I am."

DAMN IT MAN, consider the feelings of the bottom feeding parasites, the perennial posers and their apologist allies, the illegitimate deceivers.

Might be the worst cold call script ever!

When you tell someone you're a DJ...
I typically do not randomly call anyone and tell them that.

When I'm asked about my entertainment services, I most often begin the conversation about their event, their celebration, and not about ME.

how many of you get asked the question where do you play at?
Maybe 5% of the time I get inquires about open/public performance.

I simply inform them of any such opportunities.

I think the call was for a "date" .. she was just doing her due diligence ..
