Please don't beat me up for asking this question. I helped a DJ out last night with an event in Totowa, NJ. I helped him with transportation to get his equipment to the event. He did a good job.

At the event he played a few rap songs with curses. I said to him in the van after the event was over that he needed to get clean versions of those songs.

I'm asking this question because I don't play such songs that I have to worry about finding the clean version of a song.

It's as easy as finding the version with cuss words. Any reputable source (most dj pools, if you're into that), iTunes, Amazon Music, etc.... will offer explicit and clean versions of most songs.

For fairly popular songs, I try to always have both versions. I ask my clients (regardless of weddings, private parties, etc) if they have a preference or if there are any issues with one version or another. When I ask, I get appreciative feedback. A lot of the times, it hasn't really mattered, but when it did, it did.

I have the advantage of years of audio editing experience.
If I cannot find a clean version...I make one.

And sometimes it's better Than the other clean ones

For the most part, the horses have already left the barn. You can go to almost any online music streaming service right now and the versions will not be clean, Many are absolutely reprehensible. We are now the outliers with our intention to play clean edits. There are whole catalogs of artists I simply don't bother to add to my library because the lyrics are tasteless trash.

I don't buy into streaming services because they are not subject to FCC broadcast regulations and do nothing to preserve the quality of my life. Instead, they would lower it. Forget editing or even stems, cleaning up these tracks would leave me with an instrumental. It's a waste of my time, and if they didn't have talent to make good lyrics - I'm not going to waste mine to hide their incompetence or sheer disrespect for humanity.

Not being able to write clean lyrics displays a lack of actual talent, and in many instances plain human decency. We have AI now to produce catchy melodies for the talentless - but real storylines, interesting ideas, and humane lyrics - that still takes quality ideas, good human talent, and real self respect - not the narcissistic garbage we are getting in this generation.

Ha!
I can't count how many times I was going to download a "clean" version....
only to find that there were more words edited out, than left in.
It sounded like a live performance with a bad mic cord.

I don’t worry about it much. I usually take the “clean” version from my record pool.
Perfect? No. But people want it, so I play it. In certain cases, I’ll edit. But that’s rare.
Everyone has their own opinion as to what’s appropriate. I basically use broadcast appropriate music and don’t overthink it. I’m not the morality police.
I may feel different about it when listening to music for myself.
