How far will you drive one way to an event before you require a hotel room for the night?

  • I refuse to do events more than a 50 or 60 mile drive away so the issue never comes up!

I've had two gigs for my family in Western Pennsylvania.
It was a 6-hour drive, but since I was staying with family,
there was no need for a hotel room.
Second farthest gig was almost two hours.
But since my daily work commute is over an hour each way...
it wasn't much of an ordeal.

As my philly clientele builds, there have now been 2-3 situations where I have 2 events back to back in philly, so instead of driving back and forth 2 hrs each way, and getting minimal sleep, I just pay $100 for a room in the area. Between the gas and tolls for the van it ends up being around the same financially, but with the advantage of 3-4 extra hours of sleep.

We will book a hotel on events over 200 miles (which is quite often for us). We don't add it to the contract; it's on our dime. It's factored into the mileage.

The way we figure it, 200 miles is typically leaving at 9 or 10am, arriving at 1 or 2pm, 5 hr setup, 3-4 hour dance 8-11 or 8-12 usually, 3 hour +/- load out, it's now around 3am...that's a long enough day. Get to motel 3-3:30am and get a few hours sleep and drive home leisurely (and safely) in daylight.

Four seasons (on the water). I actually called them to get the loading situation figured out. They actually have security there while loading and unloading.

Hey Taso, What's the date? I live about 25 minutes from there. ...If I'm open, and not doing anything, I'd be happy to stop on by, and say hi. I attended a networking event there in February 2017.
