How do you handle people coming up to you at an event you're doing asking how much do you charge?

That's new!! DJ dress requirements.
No sir you got it wrong. I'm talking about the people attending the event. You can't control what every guest wears but I'm talking about those who feel ghetto wear is ok at an event. I'm talking guest wearing pants hanging off their butt showing their underwear and Timberland boots. We have done events like that in the past and just not interested in such events like that today.

I was wearing dresses long before it became the new normal.
Frank Burns : "Give me 2 weeks, I would of had you out of that dress"
Klinger: "Im not that easy"

As the majority says, I'll give them a card. I'd love to talk about your event, but I'm working right now. Be glad to call you if you prefer.

By your own description of the events in your area, this would require you to advertise (and work) outside of the 5 mile radius that you stay in.

So let me get this straight. To go along with you telling bar/club/venue owners how to run their establishment, you now(the DJ) have a dress code for guests that are attending someone else's event? Got it.

No you haven't got it! Again I said it before. When it comes to a bar or club I don't tell an owner what to do. If I see things are not going well in a place where it's a struggle to get patrons in the place, I offer suggestions as to how to get people to come in the place and spend money. I suggest, I don't tell them what to do! If the owner isn't making any money then how can they pay people working there including the DJ?

I have been doing this a long time and in the past I have done some questionable events for clients that I should have stayed away from. It's not a matter of telling a client how their guests should dress at their event. It's about knowing when to just say no to doing certain events. Get it now?

Let's analyze this.

If I see things are not going well in a place where it's a struggle to get patrons in the place, I offer suggestions as to how to get people to come in the place and spend money.
As stated, this would mean using your interpretation of 'things are not going well'. Without knowing the inner workings and details of a given business, how would you know things are not going well? Next, unless directly and specifically asked for your suggestions, why would you 'offer' them? Before you answer that, I know of no business that has EVER asked an untrusted stranger for 'suggestions' on how to run their business.

Even more, unless you own a successful business (demonstrable), how on earth can you give 'suggestions' to a business owner of a business completely different than your own? Most of us have never met you - and based on what we've seen, you don't even have the basics covered for your own 'business' / hobby - so how can you give someone else any 'suggestions', 'advice' or opinions? You've been here since 2011 (9 years). In that time - of the advice, suggestions and opinions that you've asked for (from people that are in your business and are successful), what have you changed?

I suggest, I don't tell them what to do!
What you call a 'suggestion', others most likely consider 'being told what to do'. Unwanted opinions are not 'suggestions' - and are not beneficial to anyone. Do you honestly believe that you can tell a mechanic, roofer, street paver, etc how to successfully operate his business?

If the owner isn't making any money then how can they pay people working there including the DJ?
Again, how is this your problem? You continuously seem to worry about things that are not your concern .. and refuse to worry about the things that are your concern.

I have been doing this a long time and in the past I have done some questionable events for clients that I should have stayed away from.
If true, you would have gained knowledge and actually applied that knowledge to move forward. Instead, you're pretty much in the same place that you were when you joined this board. Looking at the history of the other boards, you really haven't moved far from there either. What this means is that you have been and continue to be your own road block. A person standing in their own way - is the last person that can give anyone sound business 'suggestions' or advice, unwanted or not.

It's not a matter of telling a client how their guests should dress at their event. It's about knowing when to just say no to doing certain events. Get it now?
Based on your statement of guests arriving wearing clothes the way they desire vs the way you desire, then it is a matter of telling a client how their guests should dress.

Itigger please hear me out. You got it wrong. When things weren't going well in a place they might come to me to ask me for suggestions. I wouldn't go to them. So if they wanted ideas from I would tell them what I think they should do. The thing is once I gave them suggestions, they had a right to either listen to me and see if what I suggested was a good idea or they do their own thing. My position was to worry about what my concerns were. Make sure I'm playing in a comfortable environment where I'm not worried about some crap jumping off and getting paid all the money due to me.

Now obviously if not enough people are coming there and spending money in the place ten they can't afford to keep you there. So when I was asked for suggestions, it was mainly about how to attract people to the place wanting to spend their time and money there.

I agree, Great way to handle.
You need to have cards so as to hand them out??!!

.

I don’t recall you ever saying that an owner asked your opinion on things to help out. You have just always said that you had told them this or that, or they needed to do certain things to increase business.

That fact of the matter is that if you were as good as you say you are, and have a following, anyplace that you play at would/will be packed. The spot would be THROUGH THE FREAKING ROOF, just because The MixmasterMachoMan was on the set.

You can call me any day or night .. Call me

Of course I have it wrong - everyone here seems to always have it wrong - yet we're all successful.
