yeah....we as dj's used to educate and break records....its a shame so many of us now are so scared to play anything that isnt a proven floor filler....im guilty of it too.... in my club days i remember getting records from the record pool and dropping them weeks...sometimes months before they hit radio... fueling their success to become mainstream tracks...

Here's why we don't do this anymore: The audience doesn't have the attention span for it. There's so much music out there that we'll never get to hear it all in our lifetime, even though most of us have unlimited access to it on the device in our pocket. When you're getting paid to entertain an audience, every song selection is crucial - the goal is to have as many people dancing (or at least bopping their heads) simultaneously. You can't do that if you have to stop the music to teach a dance, and you certainly can't do it by playing something that nobody's familiar with.

I've learned a hundred dances by attending DJ conventions, only to get home and realize that the roomful of DJs at the convention is the most captive audience in existence. The audience at a wedding, school dance, nightclub or birthday party generally doesn't have the interest in it like we do.
