It's a shame how many people fall for either one.
So Mix, What is the stats on how many of you fall for scams?

The one I almost fell for happened many years ago. Long story short I got an email about someone getting married. It said for me to give them our price to do the wedding and I was to pay a band that was to perform as well.

I got sent 4 money orders. I was to take our portion out and send the rest to the band. The bank realized the money orders were fake and had me to wait till after the bank closed to ask me about how I got the money orders. I explained the situation and thankfully none of them got cashed. Because if they did I would have been responsible for paying the bank back. Nothing like that ever again in my case. They usually do something to tip you off it's a scam. Now with True Caller it tells me when it's a scam call.

I feel BAD for the BAND... They didn’t get paid and their children are probably going hungry and barefoot.[emoji3525]

But Mix, You didn’t “ALMOST” fall for it; you FELL for if.[emoji1] The bank SAVED your a$$.[emoji1]

If you were smart, you would have researched this app - and gotten rid of it.

Their new motto at Truecaller is almost as safe as gas station sushi ;)

I never said I didn't fall for it. I said since that time I haven't had it happen again.

Had a new scam call today... Apparently my SSN has been associated with fraudulent activity, and I’m supposed to call a phone number they left on the message before they start “legal proceedings”.[emoji1] INTERESTING!!!... Especially since I know of NO association between my SSN and my home phone number, so how did they know to call me at that number???[emoji1] I didn’t answer the phone and talk to them. I screen my calls, and rarely answer if I don’t recognize the caller’s number. I have a different cell phone number and yet another phone number for my DJ business. If someone calls my home phone and really wants to talk to me, they’ll leave a message. Most callers from those unfamiliar numbers hang up, but sometimes the scammers leave a message... like they did this time. I don’t think I’m gonna call back though.[emoji1]

Do you have true caller? If you don't download it it's awesome. It tells you when it's a scam call.

I had one call me telling me they would give me $10,000 every 14 days. I was told I needed to write down some information on how this works. I told them I was driving which I was. They humg up. When you call back you never get an answer. HEE HEE.

True caller is worse than the spammers. https://www.quora.com/Is-truecaller-safe-and-accurate-to-use?redirected_qid=3588065 . They're getting access to pretty much ALL of the raw data on your phone. That's like a damn fire hose of information. My guess would be the at least some of the data is sold to those scammy background check sites (Been Verified, Peek you, etc) lord knows who else gets their hands on YOUR information.

No use in giving a company access to all that data. You can use your phone's built in tools to set up Do Not Disturb. Set it to ring for contacts only. Everyone else will be kicked to voicemail.

I already told him that - he don't like to read or listen. ;)

I think your warning to Mix prompted me to look into it. I'd heard of the app but never used it. I'll never understand why people insert an unneeded 3rd party into the mix. Especially to do simple things that the device can do on it's own.

It was STUPID advice anyway.[emoji1] You can’t download an app to a phone that’s NOT a smart phone. My home phone number is on a MagicJack... just a wired phone/answering machine with multiple satellite phones.

We had Magic Jack for quite a while as our home phone. This was when it had to be run off a computer. I kept my Mac Mini running 24/7 just for Magic Jack. The service was decent overall. I think we switched to POTS shortly after hurricane Sandy. I decided it was more important for mom to have a phone that will just work in a power outage than worrying about a UPS for the modem, computer, etc.

Back in October I got a new phone company and chose not to port my number as I was getting quite a few prank calls. Not scams just pranks heavy breathing,
weird sounds, or I'd answer they'd hang up. Always from my local area code. It was annoying as at the time I'd always answer a local number.

This new phone number some girl Meghan had it before me. Meghan doesn't pay her bills. It seems like she signed up for every payday loan under the sun. Which is funny because they're illegal in New York. I get texts almost dailying telling me that Meghan has been approved for a $10,000 loan, student loan forgiveness, etc.

It almost makes me want to change my number again but I already have a couple of my older friends irked by me not answering texts -- they're sending them to my old number despite me walking them through deleting my contact a new one with the new number.

If Google Voice weren't so iffy I'd use that number exclusively as it's a lot more practical but GV is generally ignored by Google. They did do an interface overhaul somewhat recently but it still feels like Google might decide to sunset it. Google's track record on messaging apps is horrible.

I like that Google Voice is free, but we all know FREE does not last forever. They’ll eventually have to make money from it, or else they’ll ditch it. The good thing about MagicJacks is they are pretty inexpensive and if you want another phone line (number) you can just add another one on your existing network. The BAD thing about MagicJacks is they only last about a year and a half (typical Chinese craftsmanship), then you have to replace them. No big deal... they still cost less than almost any alternative, even when you factor in the limited lifespan. My home phone was on AT&T for 20 years, but the rates just got ridiculous for a standard land line, so I switched to the MagicJack when I retired, but kept the number. When you’ve had the same number for so long, it’s hard to change.[emoji4]

Google Voice is a great. I almost wish they charged for it so we wouldn't have to worry about it being killed down the road. I do think that it's unlikely. Killing consumer Hangouts and G+ is one thing. GV had integrations with Sprint & Google Fi be used as a primary phone number. You can change IM clients with little headache - phone numbers are different.

That was another thing with Magic Jack the customer service was horrible. I tired to port our original number over and just gave up. I couldn't imagine trying to switch a number between to devices.

Agreed on the POTS prices. My local telco wants $40-$50/mo for "Digital Phone". I'm not sure what that is. Some kind of marketing double speak because digital = VOIP to me. VOIP generally means no power no phone. This last go round I decided since we have a couple extra mobiles laying around that can always call 911 in an emergency it just wasn't worth the extra money to pay for "Digital Phone" from the local telco. We went with Spectrum the phone is line itemed at $9.99/mo. I could get it for a lot less but frankly it's just easier to one provider to call to sort it out if something goes wonky. I have more services + 3 premium channels and am paying less than I was when it was just TV & internet. SMH
