I have an inFocus Projector. The only input is vga. I need to figure how to set this up so I can show the superbowl on it. So parts need to be ordered tomarrow so I have them and can test in time.

Option 1 Use a TV tuner and VGA out on notebook.

Rick,

Be careful when you say component is RGB, it isn't standard component, even though the colors on the connectors and/or cables may be that way.

Standard component (as seen on DVD players) is Y, R-Y, B-Y OR Y, Pb, Pr OR YUV all of those are relatively the same except the scaling factors. RGB component video never really took off in the consumer world, it really was something more specialized (if used at all) in the Pro-Video realm.

When you buy Sony Trinitron monitors, like the ones used professionally in tv studios, live remote trucks, Ku-Band trucks, and Microwave trucks, among other applications too. . . You have to do your research otherwise you will buy a monitor that claims component support when it otherwise means RGB instead of the later as mentioned above.

Here is a good reference I used to double check my facts:

From what I know:

Yes you can take vga out of a pc and change it.

But to change something into vga it does not work.

IMPORTANT: THIS ADAPTER WILL ABSOLUTELY NOT CONVERT AN S-VIDEO OR COMPOSITE VIDEO SIGNAL TO VGA. IT WON"T WORK BACKWARDS. YOU CAN NOT USE IT TO DRIVE A VGA COMPUTER MONITOR WITH A CONSUMER ELECTRONICS DEVICE SUCH AS A DVD PLAYER OR VCR.

I think I need this:

It figures it's not in stock.

I'm glad you started this topic. I'm going to order one of those TV tuners and then I'll have TV on my laptop anywhere I can tap into a signal. You da man Cam.

Trust ebay, it's one of the best sources of "stuff" out there, you just have to be careful about reading the item description and deal with sellers who have good feedback ratings. I've gotten lots of things off ebay and most of the time I've been very satisfied and gotten good deals. craig's list is the mac daddy of good deals though. I've saved A LOT of money buying audio equipment off craig's list.

Just for the naysayers... ;)

Since my Epson projector came with one of the RGB to VGA adapter cables, I figured I'd plug it in and try it. Went from the RGB out of a cheapie DVD player, into the VGA of the projector -- works flawlessly

Get a cable for $10, or spend a hundred -- yer choice...

BTW, you need a separate patch cable for the audio -- but you should have a few of those around ;)

I have found that many of these places may have lower prices, but they nail you big time on the shipping.

Sometimes it's cheaper to run over to Radio shack or Fry's electronics.

Hmmmm.... I've never had that problem with either of the ones I mentioned... I buy most of my computer stuff from Newegg because they are usually on par with price between the three but has the fastest shipping to Indiana compared to the other two....

I reference all three when shopping because they don't always carry what I want at each. For example I needed a S-video to Composit adaptor... but didn't want to have to use a converter box which ment extra powercords and what not... found just a tail at pcconnection for 6 bucks and shipping was under 4.00

RS had a similar product which they didn't have in stock was $20.00

either way I would have to wait for it to arrive...

so of course I took the option that was half the price.

I avoid walking into a RS at all costs. Never had a good experience with their clerks and their stuff is always way overpriced.

I love shopping online. It's easier to compare multiple different products and lots of online places have reduced their shipping costs to make them more attractive to buy from.

Lots of product information on the internet too. In most retail stores, not so much. Most of the time I don't need things right away, I can usually wait a few days for it to be shipped. If not, I'm forced to go out and buy in a store. I'll survive . . .
