Talked to a lady on the committee who work for the park and got a date to come back down to the to the handball court and do our thing. The date is Sunday October 20th. My partners GF will make the flyer and put it on social media. I was given the suggestion for Sunday because normally not a lot of activities are going on Sunday's. So we get it for free because we helped out Saturday.

Also just got a call about possibly helping out with an event on Saturday September 28th. I will find out on Sunday if it's a go or not. So things are picking up a bit.

Macho,
Can you help me out with something here? It seems like you guy are always helping out(FREE?) with events, instead of doing the events with just your crew. Is it common in your area for dj's to just get together and do like a group effort on most parties? And share equipment?

Its funny, but you'd never guess from our posts that we only live 20 min apart.

Let's hope you weren't hoping to play handball on October 20th. Court's closed that day.

I have heard its a common thing among Black DJs (I'm black too not that it matters lol) in the northeast to get together usually on Sundays bring their systems and play. I think a lot of folks here pile on Mix but don't fully grasp the Black dj culture there in the Northeast. Its a lot of doing it for the love as far as bringing setups and playing in the park. Thats not something I have done before but i do know plenty of other guys that have done that because that is something common up that way. I love listening to my system and making small adjustments but if I did that here in Arkansas they would likely call the police on me for disturbing the peace lol. Everything he does appears not to be so much with the business in mind as far as setups in the park he just really enjoys djing and listeningto his rig. I admire his passion and drive to keep going and doing this at his age. No matter what you think abt it you have to admire that. He really enjoys what he does and thats awesome. If i werent 20+ hours away I might show up with my rig lol

For the most part, the market will establish your value.

If you are not profitable or being paid in any legitimately measurable manner, your value is obvious.

Is it common in your area...

Area is a subjective reality.

Usually other folks bring theres too but i think they collaborate there systems to make a mega system in Mixs case and then they all play on the rig they create

A sound clash is a whole different animal. A sound clash is a battle of system vs system. Very big in the Caribbean culture.

I’m originally from the northeast, and none of the dj’s I know break out the system for free, unless they are having their own cookout or party. Maybe it’s a culture thing in that area of NJ.

If people want to bring a system to entertain crowds at a park for free or little income .. have fun, no issues .. I have done free events for churches, local schools, and the town just for the fun of it.

However, you don't come on here and explain how it's going to lead to great things .. or worse .. how you are disrespected because someone didn't give you an extra $50 from a charity pool.

I wouldn't generalize it as "the Northeast"...
I've lived just over the NJ border in Pennsylvania all of my life...
I've been involved in the DJ and outdoor festival scene since I was a teen...
and I haven't seen one "gathering of DJ's" as Mix describes.

definitely don't wanna get into a race thing, but all the dj's i know... of every culture... work private events and bars... for pay. Yes these type of block parties happen or neighborhood festivals... but that's maybe 2 or 3 out of the 60-100 paid private/bar gigs they do (although most don't do these type of events period). Mix is doing these on a regular basis... not even djing half the time... and is getting paid in the form of being able to host more free events to drag heavy equipment to and hopefully not damage... and not get paid again.

Its not a race thing lol I was just speaking about the culture of what is happening. He loves to hear his sound system and to set it up to play in large open areas. People in that culture do this for free for the enjoyment. I think that may be a part of why he is doing it, because he genuine loves to play out on his system and other DJs also. Its not something I would do more than once a year maybe if I could lol but I won't knock him for doing it. To each their own.

It makes sense, but he does continuously discuss his desire to get “better paying clients”. Seems kinda counter active to his goal by doing more and more of these gigs for nothing.

I am in NY, 15 mins from Brooklyn and setting up sound systems like you showed in the video is really a Jamaican thing although they do it in other countries, even in Asia. Notice in the video that’s an organized contest going on where each of the sound systems are being graded and evaluated. I sold some of my Vegas to one guys who does each type of shows, he had a whole garage full of matched Vegas subs & speakers. At least where I am playing just a DJ playing in the park stopped many years ago. And I am from where there are a ton of people in the entertainment business. Where the disconnect is, it the way you go about doing these events in the park. If it’s connected with something like a concert, reunion, festival or something like that, then great. They have plenty of events outside during the summer and you usually get paid for doing them. But to pick a random date just to go out and play music to whoever is there or virtually just a couple people is very questionable. Especially if you say you want do this to make money. Now if you’re very young, well then that’s a different story. Your choices are limited. Getting together working with other DJs does have it’s merits but but usually most of us network, go to tradeshows, maybe Accompany other DJs to their paid shows, refer business to each. Likely the last thing I think any of us would consider is grouping our Equipment together to play to a tiny audience. Maybe it’s our age or years in the business or most here view this as business not a hobby. If it’s a hobby that’s fine just say so and it’s will be viewed as that.
