Here is how I planning on doing a Live Stream to Instagram (seems that's the best overall choice besides Twitch). I am totally open to other ways too!

1. Using Yellow Duck key to stream to Instagram from the computer.

2. Mac book Air with OBS (using a built-in webcam) framing me and DJ controller.

3. In OBS, I can set the vertical resolution for IG by importing a screen grab and conform to that resolution (nice feature in OBS).

4. DDJ Controller Running into Bose T4s outputting sound in the studio and aux output with separate controls to the iRig adapter connected to Mac Book AIr (which makes the headphone jack act as a line-level input).

It seems the biggest thing is that Instagram won't allow me to save if over an hr, so I need to be careful so I can post it later, and break the set into two segments.

Separate DJ computer...

Thoughts?

In IG, you can restart it when it drops .. and just keep rollin. I think you can push from the mac you're mixing on as well - you don't 'need' a second one.

I won't be on Instagram technically when I do this as I am using OBS with yellow duck to stream from a computer (not phone). Or is there something I could do on my phone while still streaming from the computer to restart it?

The only reason I am using the second one is so that I can use the built-in webcam.

*OBS can record locally while you cast.
*If you're running live audio through speakers, your mic will pick it up and cause echo or looping on the listener end. This is especially true when using USB audio. If your mic and iRig are analog, it will likely be okay as there is little to no latency.

Why Instagram? I mean, it's possible with Yellow Duck but it's a workaround. Yellow Duck is a third-party and has no affiliation with Instagram. The fact that they need your Instagram username and password to accomplish the job is troubling on a number of levels. Don't share your passwords, kids.

Twitch is a good solution if only to ensure that you don't get kicked off. Getting people to go find you on Twitch is the hardest part.

Facebook, for all of its problems, is still where it's at for streaming. Yes, you'll likely get kicked off at some point, but there are things you can do to try and prevent this from happening:
  • Mix in and out of songs quickly
  • Play remixes and redrums when possible
  • Enable the filter on your mixer/software and adjust it minimally, so that it filters out some of the midrange but not enough to make music unlistenable.
  • Set your pitch control to +3% or so
  • Use that airhorn effect. A lot.
  • Avoid playing music videos (or make them really tiny... a very small fraction of your main screen)
At least with Facebook, there's already an audience that's looking for something entertaining. Even the people who swore off of Facebook are coming back to it because it's got the bigger audience.

--So definitely NOT running audio through speakers/mic. Like I mentioned. coming out of my small Bose T4s into Mac Book Air via iRig2 and running OBS with Yellow Duck.

-I am not running any USB audio whatsoever. My DJ computer is just my DJ computer (it won't be doing anything else).

I know OBS can record, and I will, of course, but it's beside the point. What happens after the 1 hr maximum that Instagram allows LIVE? Does it kick the stream off with OBS? I have no issue seeing me start the stream right back up, but only if I am notified.

I assume I get an error or message within the OBS app saying the stream has stopped. Not sure...

--I chose Instagram because there is somewhat of a following/audience there and it's easy to already be in IG and tune in. Do you think I should screw that and go to Twitch instead, promote it via IG with a link?

--Can I not post to IG and FB at the same time? It seems people are doing multiple streams via Restrream using OBS. I guess that cost money. It doesn't appear OBS allows streaming to multiple platforms such as IG and Facebook at the same time.

Not that I am using the mobile IG App for this, but if going live in IG (I have never done) is there an option to go to FB Live too?

The more I think about it, is IG a bad idea. I mean, if someone is using IG, then chooses to watch the video live, they are somewhat stuck unless they get out of my video to then continue using the app. At least with a link to Twitch, they can go watch it there and not distract from still wanting to use IG.

So maybe promote and link to Twitch from IG?

Then, I don't have to worry about the time issue either.

Definitely record the whole thing via OSB... u can also do a test run recording in OSB to see how it will look and sound...

I got really tired of Instagram... and if they shut you down for certain songs... they refuse to allow that segment to be saved and up for 24 hours.... certain copyright infractions do not seem to get that severe penalty...but they do kick you off nonetheless...

Mixcloud is my go to now... but it has and will take promotion... ive sent my live page link to around 200 of my followers who actively like and comment on my ig page.... the day before my friday mix i will make a post and encourage anyone who needs the "special" link to my stream to click yes...or dm me... we will see how it goes... i figure if i can get 100 people over there its worth it... a few of my followers allready made accounts at mixcloud and followed me...which is cool

you can save the IG Live videos after the 24hs to your IG. With that said, I might just do Twitch, then post later to IGTV.
Ive had 3 half hour segments yanked ...never to be seen again...no save option offered... it was weird...

Straying from the subject perhaps, but do you guys think this might become the new way to "audition" for prospective clients?
So this has been my experience...

i did my first one in March... had huge support from my main followers... a couple weeks later i started announcing that i was going to do another one... and apparently my followers began spreading the word... because i got dozens of new friend requests and began receiving dm's from new followers who i could see i shared only one or two mutual friends with.... and they were people i know supported the live show...

The way i see it... i did in a way audition for them... because i hope they enjoyed it...and will remember me for future events...

A vendor from Ohio was one of these new followers.... and she dm'd me and asked if i could send her cards and information... shes a cake maker and says she will promote me to her clientele ...

At the end of the day...im looking for a creative outlet...and ...even better.... an audience to show off in front of... so... why not! This has atleast kept me from getting rusty.

Okay, so maybe not as much "audition" as a "new way to market". Being transparent, I'm not sure I'm ever going to try this. Not dissing what anyone else has done here but to watch a dude push buttons is about as interesting as watching paint dry. You guys (apparently) have enough personality to pull it off and get good response but for me, I'm a bump on a log. Not sure I'd ever be able to make it work. But if you can, this sure might be a new frontier for gaining traction.

its all about interaction...taking requests...giving shout outs... people love that stuff... it doesnt hurt to have some skills to pepper in... but people just like the experience... and hearing their favorite songs.

The beauty is... they are there because they want to be... not some teenager at a wedding who would rather be somewhere else... those who choose to watch are into it... so just consider it a fun wedding crowd
