I'm gettin tons of bookings for school dances this year and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for some interactive games to do with large crowds. I need somthing to keep a very large crowd entertained and for it to be short sweet and simple. I ususally do soul train lines and stuff like that, but I want something new and fresh! Any suggestions?

I do dance competitions and they allways come out fun but sometimes for smaller schools you could end up with a dead crowd but usally I have participants. You always gotta have prizes. Go and stop at block buster before the gig and get a $10 gift card so when you have the winner you can say "And Ryan is Going home with a Block Buster Card!!!". Another way is to ask the school if they want you to be interactive and have cool games, tell them you need to have 4 prizes and then the school will get them for you.

Dont forget the Cha Cha Slide!

Good Luck!

Games

Yea I obveously do the dances such as the Cha Cha Slide, Electric Slide, Mississippi Stomp, Apache, And a ton others.. But even the Cha Cha Slide is gettin old! I want something new and fresh than the same ole same old dance competitions and other games that are the norm.

Dave,
I did a 13 birthday and tried a new game they told me which was called the freeze dance and when I stopped the music they all stopped and the birthday girl and boy and I looked for people moving. It was fun and we gave away candy. This will only work for small crowds. Limbo was a hit and we do that at our dances but we need a dj and an MC working. The Dance Contest is always great.

Hope it helps,
Brian

Even Better Travis!

me doing internal thinking... would a small scavenger hunt work?

If you want scavenger hunt I can tell you a game that is even better and involves music. It is called "Musical Chairs-Scavenger Hunt". Basically I get 10 chairs in a circle and then I have a list of 10-15 items to choose from. What I do is I tell the kids and item, any item, for instantance a square of toliet paper and everyone runs to the bathroom and gets a peice of toliet paper while I elminate a chair and then I play music. When Everyone gets back there is one chair missing and someone is elimanated. The items can be: Toliet Paper Square, Napkin, Cup, Keys, Glasses, Sandal, etc.

It's a really fun game :)

Don't forget the snowball or multiplication dance. :)

I always wondered why if you are hired for a "DANCE" why we dont work to make sure thats what is accomplished. Even at Weddings we are hired for the most part for the dancing portion of the evening. Make them dance with proper music and timing. Research music for your gig , wasting time coming up with games is why your music doesnt suffice.

Jay Clients ask for games sometimes so I do it. When I am at a school dance I am supposed to make everyone have fun. Somtimes the kids want games at their dance.

I don't usually do fun & games at school functions. I have about 2 hours to hit 'em with the latest stuff(maybe mix in a few re-currents). I really use the games and dance contests at their away-from-school parties not affiliated with the school...thx

Brian did it ever occur to you

that perhaps they had DJs who couldnt get kids to dance so in order to do something they would play games?
There is one big reason they call em SCHOOL DANCES!!

I'm with ETS here, I think doing games and contests only messes with the flow of the music. If you're spinning a good mix of music, they aren't going to wanna stop dancing, but if your music selection is lacking, games and contests is a good way to cover for your inadequacy.

We're hired to play music, not games. Do I look like a clown?

Hey Kevin Kirouc does his act perhaps we can market this ventrilo:sqwink: quist act.

Brian,

Sorry I missed your question. Let me see if I can remember how the snowball dance is done:

(By the way, snowball and multiplication dance are the same thing, just different descriptions.)

Get the gals on one side of the room, guys on the other. Call one gal and guy out and have 'em each call out another. Pretty soon the floor is filled. I used to do this at elementary school dances a lot.

Folks,

Games and contests at school dances were always sponsored by the teachers/chaperones. That's my experience, anyhow. While the majority of the dances were straight music like a club, others had a theme.

One middle school I worked for did an end of school 7th grade dance every year. One of the 7th grade teachers sponsored it. They'd set the tables up with candles and Hawaiian beach themes. During the dance they'd pause for awards (every student got something) with names drawn from a hat and a concessions/restroom break.

The awards & contest breaks lasted a couple of minutes and we were back to the dance.

There were charitable dances as well. Admission was canned or dry goods that were sent to a Native American reservation fund. The SCA often sponsored these.

Then there were the HS ROTC balls. These shows were truly fun and it was good to work with pups who were polite and self-disciplined. An awards banquet was usually part of the itinerary.

Then there's the Junior Cotillions.

These shows didn't pay a lot but they were fun. :)

Here is how the old guy does it.

School dances are my personal favorite. Shorter than weddings, less time planing and no bridzillas. But the best part is that I command as much money or more for school dances.

Lets get back to the basics.....
All music (no matter what gig you play) is played in sets. Never play continued fast dances OR continued line dances all in a row. This will only burn out your dance floor and everyone will be tired and have to rest.

Now with that said, we get to a transition between fast dances and how to slow it back down. I usually do this by doing "song trivia". Nearly all dances will have a theme (my last was "Sadies in the 80's"). I will play a song that is theme related and announce that the first person to tell me the name of the song will win a T-shirt. The theme songs take me into a break where I can slow the BPM down and work back into another set.

Kids love free stuff and the more you give away, the more they will have you back.

Just my .02 cents
