I'm making this thread because I sacrificed to get the money together to get my Yamaha DSR 115's wrapped. Found a place in I believe in Englewood, NJ to get it done. They gave me a price of $300 last year to do it. I hope the price is the same. They told me there is a bit more to be done once the speakers are wrapped. Not sure what that is but my partner should know. Just curious how much better they will look once they wrap them. Also need to see how long it will take. Might have a job on September 28th. I will find out this Sunday.

I don’t get this... why is it your partner knows, but you don’t. You seem to not really operate as partners.

And how do you know the quote from last year is the same as this year? Maybe he charges more now or maybe more work is needed as you used them more.

Seems like you guys need to get actual info.., together.

Why would you not know (or not learn) exactly what it is that you're buying (paying for) for your own equipment? You don't need a partner for this, you need to communicate with the service people / vendor.

Good stuff doc ...

I don't know if wrapping will work for a speaker with a rough, duratex finish like the DSR. It's not smooth enough for the wrapping to cling to, so you'll get air pockets, which will lead to tears and rips.

It would be better to have someone remove the grill, drivers, handles/feet/other hardware, and amp modules, and then have a place that does truck bedliners spray them with the rubbery coating (or get someone to roll on some Duratex). Then you can quick sand and spray the grills with a satin black. The results would last much longer.

I used to use JBL TR-125's which also have the textured surface.
I removed the grill and hardware, taped off the cones,
and used a can of $10 truck bed liner from Home Depot to cover each speaker.

Duratex is probably a tougher product,
but you can buy it in a gallon bucket for about $40.

Wrapping works on cars because the vinyl clings to the smooth metal/glass long enough for the hot air to shrink it slightly and set up the mild adhesive. Just too irregular a surface on most pro audio finishes.

Does no good to tell this guy anything. I tried to tell him (some time ago) how easy and inexpensively he could spruce up his ratty looking speakers all by himself for less than $50, and even offered to give him some protective carry bags for them if he did it (easily a $120 value). He didn’t take me up on the offer.

He ditched my dinner invite a couple of years back too .. we must be brothers in arms ...

... be sure to invest in some covers for them when possible to keep them looking good after getting them repaired.

Good suggestion, but it probably won’t happen. Have you seen the condition of ALL of his gear???... Not good. He is obviously not one to take care of his gear, and it looks just as you’d expect. I had few wooden speakers or subs, but the ones I had looked brand new after 3 years of use. Why???... Because they all were covered (with high quality covers) when being transported and stored. I even had custom Tuki Covers made. Sure, it was not cheap, but not as expensive as the $300 he’s gonna pay to have two of his speakers refurbished, and I’d be willing to bet wrapping them is going to look no better than leaving them in their current ratty condition.

The damage to his DSRs was water damage .. I can bet they were kept in a humid/damp basement directly on the floor to get that bad on the bottom. The other speaker damages were probably from being tossed into the van without support strapping or covers.

What are you having them wrapped in? I hope not vinyl. We all told you how you could do this yourself a while ago. It would save you a couple hundred dollars.

From the looks of things, you don’t take really good care of your gear. If wrapped in a vinyl type product the speakers will look like shit again in a couple of months.

You should do a textured paint, or strip components out and take them to a place that does spray in bed liners.

You can also buy the bed liner product yourself.

I'll say it again. When I bought those speakers I knew nothing about speaker bags. I just bought the speakers without knowing anything about a speaker bag or anything to cover them during transporting them. Next month I plan on getting bags. I dropped off the speakers today to get them wrapped.
