Equipment Advice

Not sure where you’re trying to take your business, and it WOULD definitely impact what gear you would need, but it looks like you’re doing something similar to what I did. I did not go for a high-end PA system in the beginning. I upgraded my gear a little every year as I continued to pour my profits back into my business. First I added subs. Subs can make a BIG difference. You don’t mention lights, but certain types of events might demand more lighting or more upscale lighting. It all just depends.[emoji4] I’m STILL adding features and backups to my systems. I also try to make aesthetic improvements every year... better rack, Facade, scrims... whatever.[emoji1]

I have to hand it to you, that looks good, especially the facade. Great job. Adding a sub will make a huge different. I have to be honest, I've used Peavey stuff for many years but I wouldn't care for using them at this point. That said, since you already have DM tops I'd probably stick with a DM sub as well.

Well... You’ve already got more stuff than I have.[emoji1] Personally, I’ve gone to a smaller setup because I ... I... I’m OLD, and can’t setup that much stuff by myself and survive it.[emoji1] But it’s a nice look... don’t get me wrong. A sub or two perhaps might be a good addition. I got rid of my subs and went to a lighter EVOX-8 system, but subs can be a real plus if you do school dances or similar events.[emoji4]

Question, If you're not really booking very many jobs now what is the rush to add more equipment? Has a client wanted to book you and you were missing equipment? Actually wouldn't it be more worthwhile to wait and see which direction you're going to go to before you add more equipment. To me each added piece should generate increased income. Take subs if your looking to school dances it's a good addition but will it help if your looking to do more weddings. TVs or a small projection screen/video projector which can even be used for Karaoke might be a better addition. Personally I would come up with a well thought plan before I'd buy. Even though I own my company I run my major purchases through the big three (wife, mom & kids). They make me justify each purchase. The result it helps reduce useless purchases.

If you are looking at subs, check out the local rental companies (or as close to local as you can get....one I used was an hour away.) They get new models in and sell the old models at a substantial discount sometimes. I got my 2 subs that way. Started with 1, loved the difference in sound so went and got the next to last they had. I like the pole mounted look of tops over subs instead of the tripod with scrims. Still use tripod with white scrims for the ceremony setup where no subs are needed.

But, you can also rent the subs the first couple times to see if you like them and include the expense in your cost to the customer the total amount of the rental so you are out nothing, can get better shots/videos for the website with the additional gear and hear the difference personally.
