I don't think I've done a wedding since October, today being February 2nd. This really is a simple event (100 guests) but man, I feel completely rusty. Of course, it probably doesn't help that I'm using part in-house and part my own rig. The venue had a DJ facade already setup and they have 2 QSC K10s, so I just brought in my mixer and a sub. It's also my first time to work at this location, so there's that. Everything's smooth so far, knock on wood. Wondering if anyone else has this sensation on your first few gigs back?

I usually practice a couple of hours, two-three times a week in the off season, which for me is MUCH longer than yours, but practice is really not the same. That first gig after a long lay-off is ALWAYS tough. Only takes 10 minutes or so to get back in the groove once you get going. I always have to be extra careful when setting up to make sure I don’t forget something.[emoji4]

I used to, but I don't end up with much time off these days. Wedding season ran hard through December for me, and I've slowed down for January and February, but I'm still working once every 2-3 weeks.

But there is no doubt that there is less comfort after a long break of more than a month or two. Normally once the music is rolling well, the comfort starts coming back.

I still get nervous sometimes before a gig. What I do is say a prayer and after that go to work. Actually I usually pray before doing any gig. Once things get going I settle down. What can make me nervous is when it's a crowd I've never done an event for.

Not really rusty in terms of deejaying ever.

With that said...I have my first Bar Mitzvah in 2 years coming up on 2/16. I think I will feel just a bit rusty doing a mitzvah.

Been at this for 40 years and the longest I've gone without a mDJ event is two months and that was in my first year of business. So, I haven't had much time to get rusty.

Although, I will find myself playing a lot of school dances between weddings, then it takes a moment to readjust my song selections from teen crowds to more adult aged events. But for the most part, no rust or nervousness.
